Lafalum, I think you are right. Sunrise has always been a “do-er,” not someone who sits passively by.

I also want to encourage everyone to become informed and to possibly save your life or the life of a woman you know. Spread the word about the symptoms. I wish I had known more about ovarian cancer.

It is routine to get mammograms to screen for breast cancer. It is not routine to get an internal ultrasound to screen for ovarian cancer. It is not routine to have a CA125 blood test ( which can give false positives). So what do we have? We have information about symptoms. We have the ability to insist that our doctors follow up with those two tests.

Of course I would love to have a world without cancer. Being more of a realist, I hope there will come a time when getting the diagnosis of ovarian cancer is more along the lines of some other cancers. I’ve hated telling people that my cancer is ovarian because they almost always are at a loss for words. They don’t have any stories to share about friends or family who have beaten this disease.

So, let’s be positive. Make donations, be informed, and be insistent if you think things are not quite right with your body.

Sunrise . . . I hope you are there, even if you can’t respond. Thinking of you and thanking you for all you have done for us. You may be having a down time right now. If you need a pick-me-up, we are here for you! You don’t have to be perfect. Please remember that. Let us do something for you for a change!!!

Havehope; you are so right. When I first started reading Sunrise’s posts a few years ago, I felt sadness and empathy…two years on, my sister has just been diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer so it is now way more personal…still sad but now gut wrenchingly so…as Havehope said, ladies be aware of the symptoms which are so varied and so similar to regular menopausal symptoms and get checked if your body feels out of sync.

I think it is so important to raise awareness. The symptoms are often attributable to other ailments, vague, just a feeling something isn’t right. All the women I know or know of who were diagnosed with ovarian cancer knew there was something wrong, but no one could diagnose it until it was much later. So just being aware and asking for a screening can make such a difference. One might assume that ob/gyns are aware, but in 3 cases I know of, there were not on top of it. In other cases, it may be a family practictioner that one sees who is not a specialist. My DO is very on top of things, but others may not be. Awareness is key.
