My dilemma

Ok, so I have posted before about my application process, so some of you may be familiar w/ my interests/ stats etc. But my problem is this:

I applied EA to georgetown and found out yesterday that i got deferred. It is not the end of the world, but it does complicate matters a bit (besides the suckiness of being told youre not wanted)

I applied to Michigan and Indiana Oct. 28. I already got into Indiana and have a scholarship there. Dec. 2 or so they sent me an application for an honors scholarship with an essay due wednesday. I have not heard back from Michigan, but I think (or at least i did till i got the deferral) that I will get in their. When Isent in the app, I had a 1500 SAT, 3.92 gpauw, 4.56 gpa w, 11/313 rank uw, 2/313 rank w. I would have thought this was a sure thing for michigan. I dunno what got me deferred at gtown, but what if the same thing happens at mich?

So my problem is that after looking through the Indiana stuff, I just felt “Bleh,” like well i guess I could go here but I dont really want to. On the other hand, even though Michigan is a match/safety for me (i think), I would really like going there-it seems much more intense than inidiana. I was hoping that i would get a letter from michigan, but that hasnt happened yet. So i am stuck deciding whether or not to write the essay for the scholarship (which i cant use anywhere else) on top of my 8pg term paper due thursday, or to say forget it and hope that Michigan or NYU will let me in (both are clear preferences over indiana).

My other top 3 schools are columbia, penn, and princeton, which is really scary considering the deferral.

Even if I dont get that scholarship, I am still in at indiana with about a 10,000$ /year scholarship. so, is it worth the time/stress to write another essay?

How many words is the essay?

it is 600 words …its not the length but the topic that scares me…

Write about an ethical, aesthetic, political, scientific or social sisue, or creative work that has had significant impact on the world at some point in time, or a recent development or issue that has caused controversy or is being debated. Then consider the issue from a variety of different perspectives, describing and analyzing these perspectives before taking a position. Your argument should be supported with persuasive and concrete details, and you should cite all outside sources used. Remember, this essay is to be about an issue.

In 600 words!!! How ridiculous. Ugh. I can see why you are hesitating. However, my advice is to go ahead and do it. You want to have as many options to choose from in April as you possible. This is one of those times where you probably just need to ignore your wants and take care of your needs. At least they give you a wide spectrum of issues to choose from. If you are a creative person, you could write about a piece of art or music or a play. If you are a political person, there are many issues you could choose. If you like science, same thing. Try to select a topic that stirs some passion in yourself and in others. Probably the more controversial topics would be easiest to research, in terms of finding a variety of viewpoints. Look on the front page of your Sunday paper for ideas. Good luck and let us know how things turn out for you! – Momof2 in Ca

I agree with momof2inca. Go for it. I like the aesthetic option - that could be nearly anything from literature, the visual arts, music. If you are more comfortable with history than current events, look to that for inspiration. Think of the row the Impressionists started, or Amelia Bloomer, for that matter.

Is there anyone you can speak to and ask for an extension? That is an awfully short deadline considering you could be completely tied up writing papers and studying for exams to keep your grades up!! And I can see how hard it must by to get psyched to write an essay that could become moot with tomorrow’s mail.

okay nice thing…in rereading it I noticed in fine print at the bottom-
“Your completed application should be returned by the date stamped above. (dec 15) If you’re only going to be a few days late, that’s okay. No need to call and ask for an extension, just get the app in as soon as you can-we hate to see how much people spend for overnight delivery service!”

So i guess if I send it by monday (5 days late) I’ll be ok…
Thank god. Now I can write that term paper I havent started because of last weeks term papers and final exams…and pray 5 million times more than I have in the past month that I’ll get something from michigan inthe mail this week…

Fingers crossed…Thanks for the encouragement guys. Its much needed after this weekend…and ohio_mom, I really like the idea about the impressionists…I studied them a lot for french and absolutely love their work (plus the irony of the whole “dejeuner sur l’herbe” controversy in comparison with todays art and film !)

First of all-- go for mich, if that’s what you want. But let me make a little plug for Indiana. Though what you say is true, that the overall atmosphere at Michigan is more intense, the quality of education at Indiana will be excellent. If you are independent and prepared to seek out outstanding professors, and are smart and hardworking enough to attract their attention, Indiana will be a wonderful place for you. The faculty is world class. Also, Bloomington is a wonderful town.
