So to make a long story short, we had company this last week that casually left corn on the cob within reach of the newest addition to our family , a two year old golden retriever. She ate 3 ears and I didn’t know it until the next morning and although we thought she threw it all up, she ended up with a stomach blockage that requires emergency surgery . Thankfully, we were lucky that she didn’t die…we now have her home and she is supposed to wear a cone for the next two weeks. I was looking for the inflatable version on amazon when I came across an alternative garment that resembles a corset to keep pets from licking their wounds.
Does anyone here have any personal experience with this item ?
I haven’t used one of those. My one question would be if it would give the wound enough room to breathe (or whatever it’s called). My last experience with a cone was terrible; it caused my dog a near psychotic reaction and I ended up taking it off her and physically restraining her to keep from licking her stitches (she had a toe amputated).
I have never needed a cone for my dog luckily, but I have also heard of doggie life vests being used post-surgery instead of a cone. Just something you might want to look into.
I think that’s a great idea!! I have never used one of those for our dogs but will look into it in the future if needed. Cones just cause so much stress, sadness and anxiety for the dog. Sorry I cannot speak about this product from experience, but it does look great.
You probably don’t want any extra cover for the wound on top of what the vet has put on it. Dogs do OK in cones! Our large GSD survived just fine. If the pooch had the guts to eat that corn, she can tough it out a week in a cone!
But, it has been a week and he hasn’t even looked at his stitches. So we haven’t put either on him. We are keeping a close eye on him in case he starts to show interest in them.
I have one dog who needs the cone because she is relentless at trying to get to stitches. My other dog, a poodle mix, does fine in a t shirt. For her I purchase sleeveless undershirts in toddler size 2.
The first dog gets breaks from the cone if she is on the sofa with us where we can keep an eye on her.
I have two small dogs. When the first was spayed she spent the entire time until the incision was healed in a cone because she would not leave it alone. I don’t think anything else would have worked–she was determined to lick that incision. She survived the cone ordeal. I think it’s harder for the owner than the dog. The second was fine in a toddler onesie with a hole cut for her tail–something like that corset. We’d just unsnap it and roll it up a bit when she went outside. She didn’t bother her incision at all. I haven’t tried the inflatable cones, but friends have with success.
My last golden had several lumps removed from her torso. She didn’t attempt to go after the stitches. but following the vet’s advice we used a t-shirt to provide some protection from the elements when she went outdoors. (It was January.) Dog’s head went through the neck, two front legs went through the arms, waist of the shirt was kind of tied up in a knot on her back to keep it in place. I think that would work as a comfy alternative to a cone for the right dog.
My first golden was a picky eater, but the last two have been dreadful counter-surfers who would eat ANYTHING. You have my sympathy! In defense of your guests, I would never have thought of a corn cob as something a dog would eat.
