My Dorm Room Looks Empty

I go to a college that is 15 hrs away from home (driving) with my sister. When we moved to campus in August I had to take the bus because no one in my family wanted to help us come to school. Our school is in a small town and driving to Walmart and other stores cost a lot of money if we take a taxi. Neither of us drive and we still haven’t made friends that we can drive around with (we’re still trying). In our dorm we have the basic things like clothes and books, supplies, bedding and bathroom stuff but we have no TV, fridge, microwave or things to make our room more homely. When there are room checks I feel bad because our room is so empty compared to everyone else. I wanted to have a comfortable room when I came to college but I have nothing. I can just use my laptop to watch things online but what about the fridge and microwave. I have a new microwave at home I can use but if my mom sends it there would be no way to get it to my because my hall is on a hill and it would be too very to carry from the school post office. I probably won’t get help at the end of the school year to move out and would have to take the bus home so that’s another thing. I also plan to just transfer to a school closer to home to make things easier on myself for the rest of college so I can’t rent a storage room at the end of the year. Should I try to get the fridge and microwave or should I just stick it out for the rest of the year and try to get these things for my next college?

OK, let’s start with “no one in my family wanted to help us come to school.” You realize it’s a FIFTEEN hour drive, right?? Then another FIFTEEN hours back? And you realized that when you applied and accepted, right? And when you bought that new micro fridge, you realized that it would be tough to bring to your dorm?

Is there any way you can rent a micro fridge on campus? Lots of the schools we’ve seen have some available for rental, though it might be late in the year for that.

If it’s that important to you, splurge on the cab to Walmart. Or ask mom and dad for cab fare as a birthday gift. Or get a job on campus so you can afford it.

And I’m not sure how the micro fridge would make your room more homey. To me, homey invokes images of curtains and throw rugs-- things you could certainly carry from the post office.

You do realize that EVERYTHING that goes in that room in September has to come out again in May…
