In Song of Solomon, a magical realism novel written by Toni Morrison, gender inequality ubiquitously appears through different female characters which also reveals the diverse and changing society during the 1930s. Morrison introduces and describes three types of women, including the typical submissive woman at home, the independent but a social outcast, and the indulgent and weak girl. Unlike other novels that demonstrate a stereotypical woman figure, Song of Solomon reveals the changing image and role of women due to the change in society. Yet, even though women learn to adjust themselves and devote their love to live up men and the societys expectations, they cant escape the destiny of getting abandoned. Thus, while analyzing the mass difference between the female characters in the changing society, the novel also reveals the general similarity of all womens devotion and mens abandonment.
