My essay topic has already been invented! ><

For the last few weeks I have been pondering on what I would write for one of my two Georgia Tech essays. The essay topic I chose was “If you could invent anything what would it be? Why?” After some time the perfect invention sprang into my mind, creating a database management system used to combat the use of illicit drugs in EAC countries (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda). The idea isn’t complete as of now, but I have the basics down and am only thinking of how I can improve it. I chose this topic because I figured I’d be incorporating technology, something that greatly interests me, with helping people in this region of the world that I have seen my interests increase in over the last few years, and where I would love to go abroad during university for either a study abroad or volunteer program. I have to say I felt like I had just gracefully finished a puzzle that I was working on for eons.

Okay, so everything seemed to be fine, but of course I still had some concerns. I felt like this idea wasn’t unique, and had already been thought of or invented-I was right! I was reading the news and I saw an article about a service being used in India currently similar to my idea. To add more fuel to the fire, a non-profit organization in Africa is partnering with a technology provider to release this service in India in various African countries. So, not only is my invention not unique, but it will soon be implemented in the countries I had intended for it to be used in. This leaves me at a crossroad, I want to create an invention that can be utilized in EAC countries to better the lives of the people, but I just don’t think I can use the invention that I thought of now. Any suggestions?

Thanks!:D
