My Essay Topic Was Featured on Oprah & 20/20!

I wrote one of my essays on proper bra fitting (I am president of an organization that provides tools to young women so they feel better about themselves) and in the past 3 weeks both Oprah and 20/20 have done segments on the importance of a properly fitted bra.

I think that is kind of funny because a few people thought I was CRAZY for writing about this topic. The ending of my essay went like this “Just like other decisions we make in life, the red lacy one may be the most appealing but might not be the best fit”.

I hope the adcoms saw the shows and of course my essay was turned in before the segments aired.

Send your essay to Oprah. Who knows…

The organization is like so Oprah! She would really love it. We do other things besides proper bra fitting clinics btw!

Wow, you don’t even have to go to college then. Just work for Oprah and make them big bucks.

Did you get any money? I was thinking about sending Oprah stuff and wondering if there are any goods included? ^_^

The recent show on bra fitting was not the first show that oprah had on the topic, it was discussed on a previous makeover show and there was even an article about it in her magazine a few months ago

I am sure the subject has been featured in many woman’s magazines in the past, I am not claiming to have discovered the need for a properly fitted bra. My point was that some very conservative adults I know thought the topic was too risky to write about in a college essay and they were surprised that I spearhead these types of activities at my school. It was a timing thing, that’s all.

At the end of the day fit is important  and a little risk is good because it will be a break from the same old essays.

Thanks Sybbie. I know one essay reviewer on cc thought I was going for ‘shock value’. But seriously, the bra fitting seminar is just one of many activities I have arranged as president of this organization that helps young women from all s.e. backgrounds make better choices. I have also arranged guest speakers to discuss topics ranging from recognizing abusive relationships to proper table manners. When people feel more confident about themselves, they are better equipped to succeed in life.

I think the key is correlating it to what you have learned about your self, because as you learned from the bra fitting that many women can wear the same size bra and proportionally look different.

You can also spin it from the importance of support; different bras give different levels of support (some bras give too much support and are uncomfortable to the wearer, while other give so little you might as well go without). The key is finding the the support that you need that is also most flattering to who you are . I think you get the gist

Very true! The essay was written a month ago for an ED application in response to the essay question: How will you serve communities large and small in your lifetime? While other applicants probably wrote about Habitat for Humanity, food drives, tutoring, etc., I choose to write about the smaller things in life that can make a big difference. I also have a little organization that provides school supplies to children in Guatemala but I choose not to write about that because frankly I may be helping them but I am not solving any problems over there. I won’t be using this bra fitting essay again for my RD applications because the essay topics are different.

“The ending of my essay went like this ‘Just like other decisions we make in life, the red lacy one may be the most appealing but might not be the best fit’”.

Wow! You have a delightful way with words. If the whole essay was written that well, I bet the adcoms will long remember your essay as one of this year’s best. :)

Thanks Northstarmom - that is a very thoughtful remark and greatly appreciated. I just hope they were even ABLE to read my essays after reviewing my SAT scores! LOL. Not that I thought for a minute my essays would compensate for my lackluster SAT scores. This may sound goofy (not that it will happen), but if they wrote me and told me that I was a very interesting and unique person but could not accept me due to my SAT scores, I would be happy. I hope I will make an impression on someone even if it means not getting accepted. I figured that essay would either be one of their most creative or their most bizzare - either way, they will remember it (hopefully). Thanks again, you’ve made my day.

Btw…no notification for an interview (although they are optional) for this particular university. :frowning: My mom (being of course “my mom”) seems to believe that I properly conveyed my personality through my essays and left little to the imagination as to what kind of person I am; therefore, no interview is necessary. I tend to believe otherwise and that I didn’t make “the cut”.

That’s a really cute ending. That should go in one of those quote book things.

maybe if she grows up to become a famous um…bra person, it will be.
