My Extracurricular

  1. I own a website that has done relatively well regarding viewership dedicated to teaching people how to avoid falling victim to fraud online - I’ve been uploading blog posts every week with the aim to educate people on how to conduct business online safely and efficiently. On the same site, I offer affordable one on one consulting services via Skype; I’ve garnered quite a sum of money from doing so. After years of time doing business on the Internet through sites such as eBay, I’ve gained a lot of experience and hope to share it with some amateur online sellers (hence my website). Note this is something I’m extremely passionate about and hope to continue doing throughout high school.

  2. I’m a high ranked League of Legends (LoL) player in the top 10% out of 67 million who play the game (I’ve been playing the game for 4 years now). This is something I’m very passionate about, and I plan on using my skill and experience to teach new players how to improve through coaching sessions.

  3. At school, I’m a staff writer for the school newspaper. This is something I’m not particularly passionate about but do enjoy doing as it involves writing.

  4. Scored 1st a city-wide Spanish spelling bee.

Those are my EC’s. Thoughts on them? (I’m currently in 10th grade)

Your first extra curricular seems unique but the rest seem rather pedestrian. Quite honestly i dont think colleges care about spelling bee (unless its nationals top 5).

Also, top 10% in league of legend is nothing to be boasting about to colleges. Maybe if you were a professional gamer them you would call that an extracurricular. To note, I was top 0.1% in league (dia 1) and i didnt mention that to colleges, its not an extracurricular its a hobby.

Thanks for the feedback!

“Also, top 10% in league of legend is nothing to be boasting about to colleges”

I disagree. Hobbies are ECs. It means pursuits that are outside your academic curriculum-usually engaged in at school but not always. That is why it is called extracurricular. There is no context given for the rest of the information. Not clear what type of schools you are interested in and what your other curricular attributes are like. Different schools view different ECs differently and their importance is impacted by grades and courses.

I should’ve mentioned that I have a 4.0 (UW) GPA. I also haven’t taken the SAT yet and my PSAT score wasn’t anything special.

Yeah, wouldn’t mention anything about league of legends in any sort of application…ever. That being said, your first and last EC are great! It shows self motivation, savviness, and linguistic skills. Your 4.0 UW GPA (if maintained) will open the door for you almost anywhere. Consider, perhaps, joining a sport. If you’re not particularly athletic, even inter-murals can look good to a college. Keep us updated and best of luck in the future!

Don’t join a sport if you don’t like sports or aren’t good at it. Never a good idea. And what colleges are you aiming for? Judging extracurriculars with the context of what college your aiming for is pretty meaningless.

@neonerudite I just wanted a consensus on how my EC’s are looking thus far. I’m still contemplating which colleges I’ll be applying to. (sorry if I posted this on the wrong section)
