Hey guys. I was recently accepted to NYU Stern and got my FA package… just putting this out there and trying to get some input. Basically is it worth it?

Background:
My family’s income is around $55,000 and my EFC is 00010. (<- can anybody explain what this means). Got into NYU Stern, doubling in Finance and Int. Business/Accounting idk yet. I’ll also be playing soccer there if i choose to attend.

Award Letter-
Trustee Scholarship …$10,000
University Grant…$8,640
Expected ACG Grant…$750
Expected Pell Grant…$2,300
Estimated New York State TAP…$3,000
Federal Work-Study Eligibility…$4,000
Direct Stafford Loan…$3,500
Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan…$2,000
Direct PLUS Loan…$22,321

Total…$56,511

surprisingly, NYU met over 100% of my need. Cost of attendance is $56,484 but a good chunk of it is in loans. I plan on attending graduate school for a MBA and I already called the Financial Aid office and appealed. I’d appreciate your feedback. Is this feasible and truly worth it? From this list, where could I possibly get more money? My SAT was 1450 and gpa 92.81 uw, 94.4 w. Thanks in advance!

Stern is one of the top business schools in the nation so, in my opinion, its well worth it. However, with your stats I’m sure there are other great business schools you can attend whose price tag isn’t as high. You can’t beat NYC though…

It’s hard but I think the investment is worth it. Hopefully your aid will increase, but I doubt it.

Stern is 100% worth it. You can get a great job to pay back those loans with.
I’d say go for it. You’d probably regret it if you did not go.

yea, stern is great but if i graduate from stern with this, i’ll amount to $100,000 in debt. im gonna assume the 22 grand plus loan will be paid out by my parents as soon as we take it out so it even if it 5-10 grand a year that would amount to say 50 grand when i graduate and the other loans begin interest after i graduate. still, its a lot of money. is there anybody on the forum who has appealed fa decisions and received more money? btw, thanks for the reply guys. are you guys planning on nyu?

Oh and btw, does anyone know how exactly nyu works with FA appeals. I should be getting a good package from Brandeis that will probably be better than the one from NYU. Id also be playing soccer there and nyu and brandies are conference rivals… so idk??? any thoughts?

Haha I love soccer and I’m glad your into it. But seriously man, Stern is like a top top business school. I would definitely go to Stern over Brandeis. The loans are hefty but for Stern its worth it.

I got into CAS and I’m seriously concerned with the debt…I might transfer afterwards and go to NYU but it’s just so much.

I got about the same package today in the mail with my acceptance letter. I don’t see it being worth it. 100k in debt upon graduating…pshhhh. NO WAY. And my EFC was 0. I almost feel bad for the other people who are better off. I also got into Stern btw. Luckily for me, I also got into Cornell and Georgetown, which I am sure give me a much better package.

I wouldn’t really say “NYU met over 100% of my need” since meeting a need would not normally amount to your family taking on over 111k in debt over four years. Additionally, my S is in second year at NYU and it is VERY hard to actually get a WS job, so although it’s listed as 4k, it is likely that you would need an additional 4k in loans each year. I would think very seriously before taking on that kind of debt when your adult life is just beginning. In addition, your parents would have to sign for the PLUS loan; it would actually be debt in THEIR name, and if their income only results in a $10 EFC, there is no way they could make the payments of over 1k per month that that level of debt would require. I wish you the best.

anyone out there who has appealed and gotten more money from nyu?

I appealed and got $2000 more a year.

2000 more in grants or scholarships???

and what did you do? bc i just called and asked to appeal and they just did it and said it’ll take 2-3 weeks to hear back. thanks a lot

I got 2000 in grants. But its the same thing basically.
And I emailed them.

thanks a lot man… ill do that first thing tmrw morning. hopefully, they can give me more money. even a thousand would help… anyways… any other opinions on what i should do about nyu?

Are you kidding? Your stats are about average for a stern admittee, so take the money, go to stern, and count yourself lucky.

Pretty lucky indeed.

yea, im also a competative athlete with multiple offers from d1 colleges

lol… thanks… trust me, even with this package, i’ll end up going to stern but im just trying to somehow get more money you know. r you gonna go/or attending nyu?

To be blunt, graduating with that much debt is one of the dumbest things you can do. It’s hard to evaluate when you’re in HS, but that debt will screw you over in your twenties - taking out a mortage, getting your first house/apartment/car etc.

I wonder if the kids on this thread urging you to go are NYU students, alumni and parents or 16 year old HS applicants who read a brochure? I’m guessing the latter. I attend NYU and my friends who have taken on less debt than that regret it.

Every year, thousands of students take on ridiculous loans to attend schools like NYU. What seems smart at age 17 often seems idiotic by age 22, when you’re no longer blinded by prestige. Most parents on CC would bluntly tell you it’s stupid. I’m not going to tell you what to do, but I’ve given you my opinion. At least you’re in Stern so you’re better off than the kids graduating from Tisch. I know people who have turned down Ivies for less debt.

Btw, what do your parents think?

Yeah with Stern you’ll get a great job (unless you’re just a bad student or something).
