My FINAL Chance thread -- Chances at UVA, W&M, Wake Forest, VCU, and Fordham

GPA: 4.06 W; 3.94 UW
ACT: 28
(English: 31)
(Math: 28)
US History SAT II: 620
Lit SAT II : 590 (Honestly thought I did much, much better. I suppose I interpreted the pieces incorrectly. So definitely not submitting, especially because I was considering an English major)
Top ten percent in class
Graduating from high school with an Associate's Degree (4.0 UW GPA at Patrick Henry Community College)

My first semester grades were:

AP Lit: 101
AP US Gov: 99 (got a 91 on the exam)
AP Bio: 97
DE Music Appreciation: 96
DE Nutrition: 95
DE Communications: 98
DE Info. Literacy: 95

The rest of my senior courseload is:
AP Calculus
Advanced Band
Economics and Personal Finance (online)
(my school is on the block schedule, but I still have AP Lit/AP Gov all year round)

Also, generally speaking, my grades have been much higher in the last three semesters than my first four at my high school, but they were never really that low to begin with.

Extra-curriculars: Marching band for four years--Drum Major for two years, Academic team for three years, Anti-drug coalition for three years (board member for two), peer teaching--Sophomore year, Interact Club for three years, BETA Club for three years, NHS for Senior year, have published a few short stories on an online publication through a pseudonym, Concert band and symphonic band all four years, Superintendent's council--Junior year.

With really great essays, can I get into these schools?

University of Virginia (2nd round in Jefferson Scholars)
The College of William & Mary
Wake Forest University (test optional, will have an interview)
Fordham University
Virginia Commonwealth University

AP tests:

European History: 3
Language and Composition: 3
Psychology: 4
United States History: 4

I received the AP Scholar Award with Honors this year.

By the time I graduate, I'll have taken 8 AP classes.

I assume that you live in Virginia
VCU is a safety
You should get into Fordham
Wake Forest is test optional, so don’t send the ACT score and its a 50-50 shot
The other two are high matches if instate
chance back- ;/a></p>

@Lacoste I do live in VA. I don’t know why I keep forgetting to put that on these. Thank you for chancing me! I’ll look at yours now!

I think william and mary is a reach because your scores are a bit low, and you have slightly better chances at uva, but still uva would be like a low reach/reach. Like another person said, Vcu should be your safety school. Fordham, idk sorry. Wake forest would probably be your best bet. It is an excellent school, too, so make sure you do well in the interview and write some great essays.

@IAmTheGOAT Thanks for the chance! I applied for the Dec 1st deadline, so we’ll see how it goes. I thought my essays were very good. That’s main reason I didn’t send in any test scores, because I truly don’t think they reflect my writing ability.

Hey, I have a question about my essay. I saw a thread on here about how one guy’s essay was bad so that’s why he didn’t get into the schools he wanted to. I did the essay about failure, and wrote about how I was rejected for my county’s Governor’s School, and that made me work harder and taught me life lessons in how to face rejection (especially when all of my friends were accepted.) Is that good for the failure essay on the common app, or no? My English teacher was really digging it.

English teachers see the essays of many other students, too. A lot of whom are not exactly the brightest of students, so they involuntarily compare your essay to those. However, top schools receive essays predominantly from the best of students, so all the essays are more or less high quality ones.
It boils down to the message you are trying to get across, and the means by which you get that across. I personally didnt trust my english teacher because I wrote an essay last minute, and it was really poor quality, in my opinion ( we had to write UC college essays as an assignment). She gave me one if the highest grades in the class, but those essays were absolute garbage. I took it upon myself to write my essays again, and showed it to multiple friends who ave masters degrees in literature, writing, etc.
The new essays are undoubtedly much better, and I advice you do the same; dont rely on a single source. Ask many others for theur opinions and constructive criticism. You dont necessarily have to implement their advice in your essays, either. It’ll just allow you to see multiple perspectives. After all, many people will be reading these essays, not just one.

@IAmTheGOAT‌ It was a former English teacher, as I had already bugged my current English teacher. She is a 9th grade teacher, so I suppose she may be used to the type of stuff 9th graders write.

I’ll email my AP Lit teacher and my DE English teacher and see what they think.

VCU- Safety
UVA- Low Reach
William and Mary- Low Reach
Fordham- Match
Wake Forest- Match

Don’t put too much weight on my opinion, I am from Indiana so I do not really know much about these schools.

Thank you @formalllykaleb‌! What do you think about my essay? Is it a good idea or is it risky?

I think you have a good shot at all of your schools. Did you apply to UVA early? IMO that would be the most difficult school for you to get into and I still think you will get in with your current app.

Good luck!

Thank you @Musktard‌! I really appreciate it!

I think you have a good shot at everything except UVA and William and Mary. They’re reaches. Good luck! Can you chance me back?

LOL @Musktard we’ve already chanced each other.
