Well, Meryl Streep is kind of damned either way. If she looks like she expected it, that’s bad and if she looks like she didn’t, people will criticize. She reminds me of the kid who easily sets the curve on every test and everyone knows he/she will but if he/she acted like he/she expected to, it would be social suicide.

Maybe it wouldn’t fly, but I don’t see why someone like Streep, who has received so many awards couldn’t say something to the effect of “It is so gratifying to be recognized for my work; thank you.” and then go on to mention the sobering facts of Haiti or her mother and the fact that the others in the category were fabulous. Everyone knows this is not her first award. The surprise business is a bit much.

But it is a bit like Kabuki theater. They are expected to react in a certain stylized way, I guess.

oldfort, the Skype scene was hilarious. Even DH who made a little noise about going to a “chick flick” was laughing out loud.

I don’t really think Meryl Streep’s character was cheating on anyone. She was involved, quite by accident, with two men at once but had no solid committment to either of them.

My GG pet peeve is how long it took some of the winners to get up to the stage. If they hadn’t have taken so long doing that, they could have had enough time for everyone to make a decent length speech. And, while I love looking at all of the gowns, if the ladies had been wearing cocktail-length dresses, it would have been easier for them to maneuver around the tables.

My pet peeve is that no one got royally bombed and made an ass of themselves…I expect that from the GG…oh wait, I guess Kanye took care of putting one’s foot in one’s mouth for the entire year with his stupidity back in the fall.

LOL, OaksMom - I think he took care of that for the entire decade! I did not watch since we had guests, but I took a look at the pictures of the gowns on Yahoo OMG today. My biggest peeve - it looked like there weren’t any totally hideous dresses!

mafool, exactly! It’s like when a beautiful woman or handsome man’s looks are mentioned. I don’t want to hear them expound on how really surprised they are you would say that, they don’t think they’re all that much, when I was little I was quite homely, blah blah blah.

Just a simple “I am so blessed to be given the opportunity for such wonderful roles. I’d like to thank …” That doesn’t sound like she’s expecting to win.

But BB, there were Mariah Carey’s golden globes…I think that dress, while not hideous, was precarious.

“Mariah Carey’s golden globes”

ROFL!!!

PackMom, I haven’t seen the movie, but the trailers make it look like she’s the “other woman,” that she’s an accomplice in Alec Baldwin’s cheating in the new relationship. I’m sure I’ll watch it eventually. :)

I wonder if this link will work.

Who was the woman from Mad Men who was busting out of her dress? I thought she looked dreadful.

Mariah falling out of her dress? Nothing new there …

My personal PP is “Miss Golden Globe”- daughter of famous parent(s) whose job is to just stand there. What a load of nonsense. I thought Ricky Gervais was really funny, though.

And the Mad Men woman was Christina Hendricks, who plays office manager Joan on the show. Truthfully, I always though she was wearing padding to achieve that hourglass figure, but I guess not.
