My Golden Globes pet peeve

When they cut off some lesser-known person who is trying to give a substantive acceptance speech, but they let Drew Barrymore and Meryl Streep prattle on and say nothing.

Just had to get that out there.

I boycotted the GG this year due to the absence of any nominations for Sons of Anarchy.

I have to disagree that Meryl said nothing. I think her speech was genuine and heartfelt, and her mention of Partners in Health probably resulted in many more dollars being donated to that worthy cause to help those in Haiti. I can tell you that the people at PIH were absolutely thrilled with Meryl tonight.

I always laugh when celeberties start blathering on. Mery Streep did have an incredibly long speech but she had 2 nominations in the same catergory which is not normal,

I am annoyed that they cut off the guy for Up because it was one of the best films of 2009. It is a know fact in that in today’s society people would rather here from actors then creators/directors/writers/producers. I was also sad to see Michael Giacchino who was the composer of Up get off when he was excited to hear Paul McCartney scream, “Go Michael!”

I really liked Meryl’s speech.

I think Meryl Streep’s speech was a tribute to her mother as well as an effort to raise money for a good cause; I find her a little pretentious in what I perceive as her role of assumed humility at these events but not nearly as annoying and difficult to watch as the ones who really stumble in their speeches and/or seem on the verge of hysterics–Drew Barrymore was embarrassing last night. (And who knew Sandra Bullock could speak German? And she was very businesslike in her thank yous and the color of her dress was spectacularly right for her.)

Sandra Bullock’s late mother was an opera singer and I believe she was a native of Germany.

That’s interesting; it seems to have been an evening where several of the speakers made nice references to their mothers then. Good to know.

“Assumed humility” is a nice way to put it. Eventually, Meryl said something substantive, but she went round and round before making her point. How many awards has she won?
It seems disinenguous to act so surprised. Meanwhile, yeah, others were given the wrap-it-up sign when they’d barely made it to the stage.

I had an issue with the fact that they need to appear speechless (like shocked) when they get up there. For the amount of money they are getting paid to do what they do, I expect them to be well prepared when they get up there. Please, Drew B was so shocked she was speechless? For such an average person as me, if I am ever called upon to make an impromptu speech at work, I would still need to sound coherent.

oldfort, they are ACTORS… lol… think I was watching the Jets, or nothing depending on when it was on.

If you are looking for “substance” at an entertainment awards show, you are on the wrong track all together.

Just like when people take political advice from an actor… somehow as if they were more qualified to advise than others.

I never watch award shows. I got roped into it by a GF having a girl’s night. I left at 9. I figured if I really cared I could read it on CC next day.:)

Translation of Sandra Bullock’s German: “time to go to bed, brush your teeth!”

We went to see Up in the Air in lieu of watching the GGs.

I saw that Friday, missypie. Really liked it.

Liked Up in the Air too. Also really enjoyed Meryl Streep in It’s Complicated.
Don’t watch the award shows.
Did rent “The Hurt Locker” Friday night after seeing it was nominated for Best Pic. It was so intense, wouldn’t appeal to a wide audience. Can see why it didn’t win. It was of interest to me because S1 is in EOD, the subject of the movie.

I’m afraid I wouldn’t like It’s Complicated, but I could be talked into it. Isn’t the whole point that Meryl is cheated on and then hilarity ensues because then SHE becomes the cheater? Haha – not.

I must admit that I’m the only person I know who didn’t like Cocoon for much the same reason. Here these geezers get the chance to relive their youth, and they still make the same stupid mistakes. Didn’t they learn anything? Harumph.

Loved It’s Complicated. Every punch line was executed perfectly. I was on the floor with few scenes. The Skype scene was priceless.
