My GPA is low. Can I still get in a good college if im in a Prep School?

Hi there! This year I came to a private college prep boarding school as a junior. Im from europe so it was a crazy experience!

With a GPA of 2.9, can I get in NYU? Because of me being in a difficult high school, do I get a shot?
grading system is:
78+is C+
82 + is B
88+ is B+
92+ is A. we dont have A+

its hard for me cause its my first year ever in an american school and im like WHOA!
I know french and turkish fluently but english is my 3th language…

My grades are:

Ap french B+
English B
Euro B
Algebra 2 C+
physics C+

do colleges just look at your GPA as it is or do they consider which school u’re in and where u come from etc? cause i hear only %1 of people in nyu have 2,9 gpa! and what about the ppl who are coming from hard high schools? its not fair!

Life isn’t fair.

Most boarding schools subscribe to Naviance, which you should have access to now. The Naviance program will show you SAT scores and GPA’s for accepted/rejected/deferred/waitlist students from your school over several years. You should be able to see history from NYU applications.
If your school does not have Naviance, then you should have a discussion with your College Advisor who should be able to tell you the range of SAT scores/GPA’s that have been accepted by NYU in recent years. You should also ask about level of difficulty of courses.
There are many great colleges in the US, so you should have choices if you select your applications carefully next year.

I don’t know. I go to one of the best High schools in my state, have a 3.5gpa as a freshman and Its stressed I need to improve drastically. While BS are famous for being well known as challenging and helping you get into great colleges it doesn’t guarantee anything at all. My school is kinda well known for its grades in our state, We have people moving just to come into the district but I know I will still struggle to get into BS along with colleges. So I think its questionable. Then again- I’m only a freshman. (:

We’ve taken my son on several college visits the last few months and sat through four information sessions about what they’re looking for in an application. The #1 thing the top colleges seem to look at is whether you are taking challenging courses, and how you are doing in them based on your school’s profile. They don’t compare your GPA to someone from another school because that school might have a 12.0 GPA scale and your school might use a 4.0 GPA scale.

That being said, if you plan to go to an American college you might want to use this summer to really develop your English abilities and/or see if you can repeat Algebra II in summer school somewhere. I wouldn’t normally say that to someone who has a C+, but you’ve set your sights pretty high; NYU can be tough to get into and you’re going to need to do well on your SATs.

Colleges look at other things as well, by the way. They look at community service and sports and leadership positions–they are interested in a well-rounded student body, not having a student body of all straight-A students. Having been at a boarding school also is a plus–they don’t have to worry so much about homesickness, and you’ll be a natural help in their dorm environment.

Good luck!
