When I applied to a summer program several months ago, we had to write an essay based on one of several topics. I chose “Suppose you to choose one person - a modern person or a person from another era - to travel on you with a cross-country automobile trip. Who would you choose and why? What would you hope to learn from him/her?” I wrote about Jack Kerouac. The “gimmick”, if you will, of the essay was that I tried to emulate his “spontaneous prose” style for most of it. Unless you’ve read Kerouac, it sounds like a terrible pretentious mess, but I go into the program, so apparently someone was familiar with him.

Now, I know that I’ll have to tweak the essay quite a bit to turn into a college essay, just because as it is it doesn’t connect much to that concept or reflect tremendously on me. I’m just wanting to know if you all think it’s a good idea and something I should work with, or just abandon it and try something else.

Also, I’m not really looking for criticism on how little I sound like Kerouac =) I wasn’t as much trying to sound exactly like him as I was trying to write in his style.

If you’re interested in reading, just post and I’ll PM you
