My Journey (GPA from 1.7 to 3.6) &some advise

Unlike everyone here, I never even thought of applying to the UCs. I completed 6 units my first year at CC. Dropped most of my classes, got a few C’s and F’s. It was not until the summer of 2008 when I finally realized it wasn’t the life I wanted.

I started by taking a few summer classes to bring up my GPA(16 units); I couldn’t join the honors program because of bad grades I had. So how did I get into the program with my 1.7 GPA? I had to take 1 honors class and get an A to be official.

I am currently taking 20 units and will be honors certified by the end of spring(have to take another 20 units next semester to complete UC Requirement)

I’m currently a student senator, board of 2 honor society, various campus committees and bunch of other extra curricular stuff. It’s crazy how all these just happened in less than a year.

I think it’s never too late to try, as long as you put your mind into it. I’m sure everyone’s stressing out over the whole UC personal statement stuff. Just be honest and sincere, if you are like me, who doesn’t have the best GPA, write a really good personal statement. unlike most UCs, Berkley and LA really do read them! Make your personality pop out!

I am currently a student transfer adviser at my school. If you have any questions, let me know. I will try my best to help!

wow, that was long. thanks for reading =)

Actually my first attempt at CC was similar to yours. I remember my first semester I got two F’s, a W, and an A.

I wanted to get out and travel so I joined the AF as a firefighter and got out of town. By the time I was done with that my head was pulled out of my ass (imo, military service is 10x more educational than college).

Gratz on pulling your head out of your ass too.

Hello.

Your story was very inspiring. My story is similar to you, although i did not make that big of a jump. i went from a 2.8 GPA to a 3.4. I’m trying to transfer out of UC Riverside and into UCLA or UCB.

The second prompt of my personal statement explains why my grades were not very good in the beginning but it doesn’t really answer the question they are asking. Should i rewrite it and save the explanation for the third (optional) prompt? whats your advice? thanks

similar here too. I went to a 4 year out of hs, got 6Fs, a W and a D freshman year, and not much better for the following two years. Got my act together, started kicking ass, and now Im at USC. If you really want it, you can make anything happen…

I believe the academic explanation part should be in the optional Prompt3. (that’s what I’m going to do too)
Talk about your accomplishments, goals, major in the first two.

That’s very impressive especially you were coming from a 4 yr! I wish I can apply to USC, but they do not honor academic forgiveness(I retook a few classes)
anyways, good luck at USC!

thanks for the reply zdn7788521

I can also relate to your story. The first 2 years of my college career was a complete mess. The counseler’s at my CC never gave up and even helped me get into the Honor’s Program. I appreciate everything that I have accomplished that much more.

I can relate I went from 0.00 to 4.0’s last few semesters while taking harder classes, never thought I would even be able to apply to UC’s but I’m already accepted at UCI and UCD with TAGs as bio major  also applying to UCB and UCLA as well. zdn7788521
what was your topic for prompt #2?

macattack510:

it’s about a summer school that I started in another country a year ago. I didn’t talk about my grades at all in this prompt.

nijikon5:
At first I really thought my counselor believed in me, LOL
but then I found out that they are supposed to encourage all students…even though they think someone has no chance of getting into berkley with a low gpa.

he got into ucla!!!
