<p>I have two last questions before move in & I was wondering if somebody knew the answer…
How hard is to find a decent job? I was lucky enough to have a reallyy nice job in HS, and I am hoping I don’t have to work in McDonalds. Is it hard to work in the library/gym/etc? What about research/doing something related to my major?
Is it going to suck when I move in? Some friends that already started to move in to college are having a fairly hard time adapting, and I am scared that I will find myself crying the first night.</p>
<p>marg - don’t know about the job part, but you are going to be really busy when school starts. UNC goes out of their way to create tons of freshmen activities to keep you that way…haha! The first night you are likely to be exhausted more than anything else. But being homesick is very natural, everyone goes through it. Keep yourself busy, join organizations, go to games, tryout out for a club sport…and you’ll be fine. Keep your door open and you’ll bond with fellow freshmen on your floor. </p>
<p>It IS a little different for oos students who, for the most part, are not coming to college with their h.s. buddies in their backpack…but my d found the in-state kids very friendly and fun to hang with. When she arrived, a couple of in-state girls were waiting for her because they saw her name and ‘Texas’ on her dorm door and they couldn’t wait to meet the oos girl and get to know her. They were actually beside themselves that there were so many oos kids on the floor…lol!</p>
<p>i just got an email from unc today for the august info and they said a job fair for non work-study students will be held the first week we get there and they have reps from on-campus and off.</p>
<p>my biggest worry is that i’m moving from charleston, sc to a land locked town. and i wont have a car my freshman year, so i’ll have to rely on buses. it will be hard to live without my benz.</p>
<p>I know a freshman who just recently paid about $300 for the year for a parking space at an apartment nearby, so there are parking spaces around town if you look.</p>
<p>There will be plenty going on so I don’t think you’ll have trouble adapting. The OOS Students Assn will have an event very early on so that you can meet fellow OOSers and get your OSSA t shirt. They have GREAT tongue-in-cheek and not too subtle message on the shirts; one year was “We Just Score Higher” and another was something like “Helping to Underwrite Your Education Since 1889” (or whatever year UNC was founded) they are all guaranteed to evoke a smile.</p>
<p>For those who might interpret this as anything other than good fun please don’t get your dander up…my son’s in-state friends all look forward to seeing his new shirt every year.</p>
<p>If you plan to rush a sorority, those events will be going on as well as all the “Week of Wonder” events. Unless you try hard to not fit in, you’ll be too busy to not adapt easily.</p>
<p>What are you planning to major in? With decent research background or educational background and a few emails to professors, it is very possible to get a research job. However, a lot of the professors do prefer freshmen who are going to do synthetic research to wait until they have taken a few lab courses during the first year to learn proper protocol. Graduate students, post-docs, and professors will be busy throughout the school year and won’t have time to teach new students as much as they could if you have little experience. But it definitely is possible. For instance, I’ve been working in the Chem Dept for the past 5 weeks and will be continuing throughout the school year and I am an incoming freshman. <p>^^^ One of my majors is Psychology, so research would be an amazing oportunity. I don’t have research experience. How did you go about getting your research job?</p>
