My Math Story: What Should I Do?

Math isn’t really my “strong subject”, here’s my story: In the eighth grade I took Honors Algebra 1 (usually what all the honors kid take during the eighth grade) and didn’t do so well. In order to get credit for the class you must take a CRES test, (a test to show if you know the information and able to reproduce it) and an Algebra HSA. (High School Assessment) Your CRES scores have to have an average of 61% or above. I got an embarrassing average of 59% I passed the HSA and passed the class with a B+ However I didn’t get credit for the class and therefore I retook it in my 9th grade year and passed it with a 98%. I’m now in my sophomore year taking Geometry (current grade: 96%) and taking Algebra II next semester. I feel really embarrassed that I’m taking Geometry in my sophomore year. I have my eyes set on becoming a Veterinarian and I’ve heard and read that you need to take Calculus (AP Calculus AB & BC) in high school. Calculus seems VERY challenging and I think I’m not ready for it. Should I try to take AP Calculus, or Statistics & Probability my Junior year?

I’m in geometry as well and I don’t see how this is embarrassing. It’s okay not to be good at everything and it seems to be that you doing fine in your math class right now. Geometry is a sophomore course…

The jump from geometry straight to AP Calc AB/BC would be very, VERY tough. Taking AP Calc AB/BC in high school is not (in my knowledge) required for anything. I could only see it being extremely valuable to take AP Calc if you want to major in areas like business, math, or engineering (among others). There is no way that to become a vet you will need to take any calculus in high school. While it may look good, being a vet is not very math heavy. If you plan on majoring in biology or something, calc would not be required.

The jump from Geometry to Calculus shouldn’t be so hard, with the correct self-preparation. A thorough understanding of math up to the level tested on the SAT 2: Math II should suffice.

Study the math review section of this over the summer, and if you are able to understand everything perfectly well, then you should have an appropriate background for calculus: [SparkNotes: SAT Subject Test: Math Level 2](<a href=“SparkNotes: Today's Most Popular Study Guides”>SparkNotes: Today's Most Popular Study Guides)

If you want to be even more comfortable, I’d recommend looking into more thorough, printed versions of Math II prep books.

I would recommend taking Algebra 2 over the summer … that’s what I did!
