SO my math teacher is Asian (I just want to put everything into perspective lol)
I am the valedictorian of my highschool and I will be attending Johns Hopkins University on a full scholarship. I chose to apply ED to Hopkins because I LOVE their international studies major. It beat out any Ivy’s, in my opinion, bec of the possibility of a joint program with SAIS (one of the tippity top schools for international relations in the world).

Well anyway, my teacher keeps making snide remarks about my school choice. Today she walks in with a newspaper about how the val from a neighboring school got into Harvard and she was like ***“this val is going to Harvard…a number one ranked school. Our val is going to Hopkins ranked number 13. this is making me upset. i like to be better than this school” ***then she started to show to newspaper to everyone and kept comparing me and that other kid. and in my head im like, ***? she is making me feel so inadequate!
I personally think that Hopkins is a great school. I didnt even apply to Harvard be/c I wasn’t fond of the school’s arrogance. However, I must admit that it is my goal to attend Harvard Law from Hopkins.
Anyway, I am just so upset that she would say something like that in front of many other teachers and students. It’s like she’s scoffing at my acceptance. And I also don’t understand her bec she said her very own children applied to Hopkins and didnt get in!!
Hopkins is the highest ranked school that anyone in my district is going to btw.

Omg, is this woman crazy? How can I not let her affect me?! I have to write a vale speech yet I suddenly feel so inadequate bec of what she did D:

Your going to have to deal with her for how much longer? A few months?
I’d just take it and avoid trouble till you have your diploma in hand, and once you do ask her what college she graduated from. If its not in the top 20s, laugh it off and walk away.

she went to the univeristy of long island (or smething like that). def not in the top 20.
but her children went to carnegie mellon and columbia.
i am going to try to ignore her -_- i have one last presentation to do for her and then from there I’m just going to ignore her. that whole situation was ridiculous

i wasn"t trying to be offensive lol. but you have to admit that there is a general elitism associated with the university.
however, i take the statement back and i would really appreciate it if attention was moved back to the actual question i posed

Just look at her incredulously and ignore her, as if she was saying something ridiculous in another matter, or criticizing your nationality, or some such thing.

You can tell your parents or the administration or make fun of your teacher in class. Come off as a racist, if you dare, to truly agitate her. Yeah, its great going to a #1 school but that doesn’t mean your going to be successful. Just because the school is ranked #1 doesn’t mean all of its programs are. Depending on the major a person chooses, you may be better off going to a state university than a prestigious top 20.

She sounds like she’s crazy. Go where you want to go.

You know, we have a crazy Asian math teacher at my HS too. At least one of her kids went to MIT, don’t know about the others. She had them doing AP Calculus in 6th grade…yeah, crazy I know. She calls the students in her class “stupid Americans” on a daily basis and our principal doesn’t care. Many students and parents have complained about her and dropped her class.

Other than the fact that you are calling an entire school arrogant (and a few of my friends are going there because of the school’s chillness), she has no business calling you out. I’d pull her to the side and calmly explain why she is getting on my nerves. “Miss , I don’t appreciate how you are downplaying Johns Hopkins. I am going there because I really like _, _, and ___.” Bam.

Adults hate being called out, but this shows concerns without sounding like a brat.

I feel like you should have said offhandedly said something like, “Oh, really? I agree that we should be better than that school; of course, the competence of a school’s faculty is effectively the deciding factor… I hear their entire math department went to MIT or Harvard. Where’d you say you went to college again? I want to be better than that school.”

omg thanks i feel a bit better -_-
i hope that when i get to college, people would stop caring about whether or not a school is part of the ivy league

My D was a val this year and got into H but picked a much lower ranked school that fit her better. She also heard remarks from her math teacher and several others encouraging her to go to H but they weren’t obnoxious like your teachers. She just learned to smile and nod, smile and nod.
