If anyone is wondering if they need 4G or not… I have not used mine much. I find that surfing is much faster on WiFi. At the mall, I mooch off the Apple store WiFi, pretty much every Starbucks has a WiFi connection, and most hotels have free wireless in the public areas…

Re: that “scrabble game” (Words With Friends)…there is a chat function on it too. I play with my sisters who live halfway across the country. We chat and share what we are doing while we play. It’s like having a conversation with them while playing a game.

BB, glad to hear that you don’t use the 4g. I took a gamble and got the 32g with wifi only. My S told me that you just don’t go many places anymore without wifi and that the 4g could get pretty expensive if you don’t watch it.

Really enjoying my ipad. Downloading all kinds of apps.

We have two library networks that permit audio books to be downloaded to ipads and this comes in handy for the commute. I had a disaster with the Razr Maxx, though - it doesn’t support the protected wma format that most of our audiobooks are available in, and had to return it.

Not sure if this app is mentioned earlier in this thread but I just downloaded Flipboard yesterday and am enjoying it.

Itunes description: Named Apple’s iPad App of the year and one of TIME’s Top 50 Innovations, Flipboard creates a personalized magazine out of everything being shared with you. Flip through your Facebook newsfeed, tweets from your Twitter timeline, photos from Instagram friends and much more.

Fill Flipboard with the things you like to read, from niche blogs to publications like Rolling Stone and Lonely Planet, and use Instapaper or Read It Later to save articles to read later. Flipboard creates a single place to enjoy, browse, comment on and share all the news, photos and updates that matter to you.

In addition to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, you can flip through your newsfeeds and timelines from Google Reader, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Flickr, 500px, Sina Weibo and Renren on Flipboard.

To me, it’s like my morning quick scan of the paper x10! So far I’m liking it! Free app.

App of the day.

Oh, wow, ek! Thanks. I will check it out.

Hubby just bought me one for my birthday. I’ve been whining that i want a smartphone, but I won’t spend the $ monthly. I like the apps concept and that is part of why I wanted it, and for photos (to show people.)

Really, it’s probably not worth the $, but he was happy to surprise me and get me something I’d like. I do like it! Just the practical me wouldn’t buy it. I was hoping my mom would get bored of hers one day and tell me to take it! She got hers for traveling because she can bring her books on it and check her email and stuff. My brother is an Apple FANATIC and he talked her into it.

All the people my hubby talked to talked him into the 4G. Another thing I wouldn’t have gotten…but he is right that it is something you can’t change your mind about and add on. If I don’t use it much and sell it, it will make it more sellable.

We THINK you can do month to month with Verizon for $20/month for 1 gb of data. Thinking that on those occasions when we are traveling, for short or long, it might be handy. It would be really nice to have the 4G on car trips. HE has a smartphone, (blackberry Torch–work just upgraded him this week), but with our old eyes the bigger screen on the iPad on the road would be nice if we needed maps or anything else we’d look up on a trip.

I’m still trying to find apps that are cool. I thought there’d be so many, but I haven’t found much. I’m trying to keep to the free or cheap ones. I did put xifinity mobile from comcast which is nice to check my email.

I like bringing it to my room with me and being able to check the email and stuff without going downstairs, especially in the morning.

I’d like a smartphone too but I bought an iPod Touch instead. I have a first gen iPod Touch and it was slow and the apps weren’t very good when it came out. The iPod Touch I bought last week is 4th generation, fast, good display and I am very impressed with apps today compared to several years ago.

The idea of the App is that it’s a thick client model where the application sits on the client device instead of using a web browser as a thin client. The downside of using the web browser is that all of the formatting has to be sent which can use up a lot of bandwidth and web pages are interpreted making them relatively slow compared to apps. Another thing is that there is far less space to put up all kinds of annoying ads compared to web pages.

I am extremely impressed what I can do with the iPod Touch, the quality of the apps that I use and how much I can do without a PC. I have a Verizon MiFi which provides me with a 4G Hotspot that I use for working remotely. This allows me to make and receive calls and text messages on the iPod Touch in addition to providing me with data access.

The plans are different on AT&T vs Verizon. We have a 3G AT&T and it was great on a long drip last year. This year we can use the 3G AT&T or 4G Verizon with the iPad - the places where we will probably go this year may have spotty access so having the option of two wireless providers might prove handy.

After my experience with the iPod Touch, I can see getting an iPhone this year if: they add 4G capability and provide a 4 inch screen with the current form factor (or very slightly bigger). I don’t like the crop of huge phones out there. If I get an iPhone, I’d try to drop the MiFi contract as I would tether off the iPhone for work.

I check my email, the weather and the markets using the iPod or iPad. The weather check is important as I decide on what to wear to work based on the forecast.

BTW, you can use the iPad as a phone - get a Google Voice account and phone number and then get the Talkatone app and you can use the iPad as a wireless phone. I’m giving some thought about getting rid of the landline as I can make calls through WiFi or using my mobile phone.

More toys for your iPad.
