My new toy - can I do anything productive with my iPad?

LOL - I’m staying away from games for now. :)

Houzz! Not the least bit productive, but glorious eye candy for home decor.

As I mentioned in the Exercise thread, a strategically positioned on the floor iPad makes doing planks less boring. :)

I love this little device! As I was cooking dinner with my friend, we watched YouTube videos for entertainment.

I should have also mentioned I am totally addicted to the TED app that provides a new TED talk almost every weekday. So many fascinating people and topics. And they are great on the iPad. I also have Pandora in the background when I am reading and there isn’t anyone else around to bother. I learn of good new music that way. Of course, you were looking for productive uses and these can really take you away from being productive :)

I found something out by accident on my iPad the other night…when my iPad (1) is on and I press the off button and the home button at the same time, the iPad takes a snapshot of what is “on the desktop” and puts the image in Photos.

Not sure how I’ll use it yet…take photos of something on the web that I want to save, maybe…

^^That’s one of the tricks I learned from MacBlend. :)

"I didn’t know there were hotels that still charge for wi-fi. "
-As far as I know all. But we always go to Mexico on vacation.

Some hotels still charge for it but I think that the numbers are dwindling.

I bring my MiFi along for Internet access anywhere. It’s expensive but it allows me great work flexibility.

I admit I don’t travel that much & only leave the country every few months, but I can’t remember the last time that wifi was added onto my bill. However, I haven’t been to Mexico lately.

( oh this explains it. I stay in moderate price hotels which don’t charge, as compared to high end ones, which do.)
[Memo to hotels: Stop charging for WiFi - Travel Weekly](Memo to hotels: Stop charging for WiFi: Travel Weekly)

I think that this is one reason as to why devices like the MiFi are becoming popular. Also, tethering your laptop or iPad from your smart phone. The additional advantage of the MiFi and tethering is that you’re on your own private network - not a local LAN which may have bad actors on it.

I used to have a Mifi, but I didn’t do a very good job keeping track of it.
I can tether with my iPhone if I have to though.

Can someone simply explain how the “tethering” to a smart phone works? Can a non-Apple smartphone tether to an iPad? What do you need equipment wise, how much does this cost, etc.???

Your iPad or other device basically just uses your phones wireless connection. You don’t need any other equipment.

The charges would depend on your pHone plan(& whether you are uNofficially tethering or not)

Downloaded vtok to use with Google chats (to bypass the Flash issue). I guess you get what you paid for, LOL.

Got a book titled My iPad from Costco - it has instructions how to use iMovie and many other apps. Let the time wasting begin!!!

I haven’t bought one yet, but wondering if there is an app that lets me clips things from magazines - I’m the typie that rips out recipes, pictures, parts of articles, etc and end up with lots scraps of paper at the bottom of my bag.

Leaving Sunday on 2 week around-the-world business trip and borrowed D1s Kindle to lighten my load.

^^Yes!!! There is an app for that. I think I saw a few. Are you on Pinterest?

This was recommended to me for recipies:

:) Time waste central.
I actually find my iPad very useful. I use it to study and to read books, I watched a movie and a web cartoon series (Youtube; dont have time for more now), had a few chats via Skype and Gmail…

Nj2011, that’s EXACTLY what Pinterest does! Most anything you find online can be pinned to your “bulletin boards” for “filing” of sort! That’s exactly how I describe it - that it can take the place of all that magazine clipping, filing, etc.

I don’t use the Pinterest app though - I just go directly to the site on my iPad - have heard that the app is kind of lacking…

is Pinterest a public site? i don’t want to share all my random scraps with people. Also was looking for something that would just reside on my device and not have to access the internet.

nj2011mom, I highly recommend Evernote for saving recipes, inspiration photos, etc. I think it will do exactly what you are looking to do. It is not public, but you can access your files from any source by logging into your account. I have it on my laptop, phone and tablet so I can get to my files wherever I am. In fact, I pulled it up on my phone last night when I was in the grocery store and couldn’t remember the ingredients for a recipe I want to make. It’s very easy to clip text/photos/pages from websites and you can also snap a photo with your phone and save it to your Evernote account. A cool feature is it’s ability to search for text within a photo so, for example, I can take a picture of recipe in a magazine and the program is able to search the photo for keywords. Have to say I’m having lots of fun with it.

Both Evernote and Instapaper save articles. But I have had some glitches with Instapaper so will probably migrate to Evernote.
