@GloriaVaughn I got diagnosed with GAD this year. Psychologist (mom takes me there. Dad refuses to support anything) didn’t get me on meds or anything (believes therapy is the first option). Dad wants me on a stronger ADHD medication (when I have all A’s in school) as well as strong meds for anxiety because he thinks that will make me docile, obedient and not rebellious (hint: the side effects of meds are strong on me and make me feel miserable and lethargic, which is what he wants)
They also had me take a test at the end of 2nd grade (was like a gifted test like something…) and after taking the test, IEP Was discontinued
Last time I’ll comment here, but as mentioned previously, you are an adult now. Your dad cannot take you to the doctor and get you medicated. He cannot assault you, unless he wants to go to jail. You have just as many legal rights as your dad and mom do, now. You can either complain about your parents or do something about it. Get out if you want, couch surf at a friends’ house until graduation, if you need to. Or just stay there and let things stay the same. I understand that you need to vent, but you also need to remove yourself from victim mode. It doesn’t help you at all.
Based on the AP classes you have already taken (based on a previous thread you made), the max number of credits that apply at UVA is 21. Even if you took all AP classes this year, you are probably nowhere near 60 credits. Where is that number coming from? Honestly though, this thread has been running in circles. If you home situation is as bad as you say it is, you have more pressing issues than where you are going to college next year. You need to get out of the situation before you even worry about where you will be next year. Find someone that you trust (GC would be a good start) and make a plan to get out. Open up a bank account, and/or get a prepaid VISA (there are literally stores on every corner (even in a crappy town) where that can be accomplished. Hopefully you can move forward and into a better place.
Just because you get the credits, does not mean they qualify towards your major. My daughter has tons of credits towards non STEM related classes, but they will not help in any way with her major required credits. You may go in with 60 credits (which considering you only got 21 for the 3 years prior to now is highly improvable) but not all of them will count towards your major(s).
So let me get this straight … you’ve been admitted to college AND somebody is willing to pay for it? I had to work my way through college with no financial help from anyone.
I agree with @vineyardview - either leave and fully support yourself (it can be done) or be grateful for the opportunity to attend college where you’ll gain knowledge and independence. Good luck.
Still catching up on the flurry of posts this afternoon so I apologize if I misunderstand or this has been brought up already – regarding the parental 3 semester UVA grad plan.
UVA says a student at College of Arts and Sciences must earn 102 credits from the College of Arts and Sciences or certain approved classes from other Colleges within UVA. It does not appear that transfer credits or AP/IB credits can contribute to this 102 credit UVA requirement. That is incompatible with a 3 semester plan, plus summer and winter terms.
are they going to yank your support if it takes more than 1.5 semesters? that’s my big concern. yes, it’s nice they are willing to pay for a few schools but if it comes with so many strings attached and used as a constant bludgeon to keep you in line, it may not be worth it.
on the other hand, you are sitting on a very valuable asset that puts a great deal of power and control in your hands. your stellar academic record is worth a great deal to many schools. for example, tuition + housing at UAH runs about $27K for OOS student. that’s $108,000 that you are potentially sitting on – more if you apply for and get competitive scholarships. you would get full tuition at Ole Miss with a chance for additional scholarship that would cover cost of attendance.
the problem is, once you enroll anywhere else that your parents will pay for, you lose your freshman status, and you relinquish all power and control over your college choice back to your parents.
now maybe you don’t mind them calling the shots over your life for your undergrad career … and your grad school … and the rest of your life … just so they will pay for a good “prestige” undergrad school for you to attend.
but maybe it’s worth it to attend a school with less prestige and elite-ness, in order to take control of your life and call your own shots. to show them you can do it on your own merits, without their help.
based on what you have described, i know what I would choose.
Your parents are so labile that I wouldn’t trust that they’d continue to pay, even if you enroll in an approved college. What’s to say that they wouldn’t keep moving the end zone? You need a certain GPA, you must major in a subject of their choosing, you must come home every weekend, etc, etc.
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Wow, go away to attend class for a few hours and a thread can quickly go off the rails.
Alternatively, I can help it along. The conversation is going in circles ind there is nothing to say that has not been said. Closing. Good luck to the OP
