I know its not great but is it really that bad? I now feel as if I failed. what do you think?

it depends on what kind of student you are

A 28 is very good score (from a parents POV). How good depends upon which colleges you want to get into and if you are interested in merit aide. Also, does it match your grades/difficulty of classes?

Sorry your parents said that. My son was disappointed in his 31 (no studying) but I was very excited for him.

My GPA is a 4.1. Im a determined student but I am also not an Ivy League student although they wish i was.

If you’re not considering the ivies, then a score of a 28 is very solid. Obviously not top-tier, but definitely not a failure. There’s always next time too!

Hence lies the problem. If you’re excited about your 28, be excited, and don’t let your “I WANT YOU TO OVERACHIEVE” parents tell you otherwise :D

If you tried your best (lots of preparation) then don’t be mad. I don’t want to burst your bubble, but a 28 isn’t very good.

If this is the first time you took the ACT, then a 28 is great. It’s the 91%. Why not take the test again. If your parents want to put their money where their mouth is, say you want private tutors to prepare for the next try. With that kind of help, and some extra hours put in by you, there is a very good chance of improving that score. That would make both you and your parents happy. Go for it!

You should absolutely not feel bad. The average score on the ACT is 21, so you are WELL above average. It’s really unfair for your parents to put that kind of pressure on you.
You fall comfortably within the middle 50% of scores for UCLA and UC Berekeley for example, both great schools.

Working to get your ACT score up to a 30 would make a huge difference applying to UCLA, for example. Admit rate for ACT Composite 26-29:18.5%, 30 and above;47.6%

sandiego4866: Those percents are kind of misleading. Having a 30 and up score isn’t really informative, because you can have a 30 or a 36 (completely different scores). Someone with a 30 on the ACT probably has only a small advantage from someone who has a 28.

The score is great, but you can always retake to do better. Maybe you had one section that brought down your composite as a whole. I got a 33 on it when I took it, but my 30 reading kept me from the 34 I was shooting for.
