My RR and Grammatix Review

Okay, I’ve got b oth of these and you asked for a review, so here it comes:

Grammatix was okay. But it only gave me maybe 4 pieces of information that I didn’t know. So y’all will be paying $50 for 4 pieces of information. That I could just write out here. In 4 sentences. Or less. On the nicer side, I did like how he had explainations to certain sections of the blue book. But if you really suck at SAT, then you might want to get this.

Rocket Review is just… wonderful. I mean, I didn’t have time to work through the whole book, but I read it all and did a few things and its… great. I’ll use it so I can study for the real SAT before I take the ACT. This book is really, really worth the $20 -30. You guys get this book!

So, IMO, RR > Grammatix.

That’s my review.

If you want a plan of study, here’s what I reccomend.

 1. RR
 2. Do practice writing tests DAILY. Just do a little bit every day! Your score will go up, I swear!
 3. If you get Grammatix, follow the bit of advice he has. They really did help.

What was your score? My score went up by 140 points on the CR Section ALONE, all thanks to Grammatix! And I suck at reading too! RR is 700 pages long, and its takes a long time to go through it. Grammatix is short and to the point. Dont get me wrong, RR is good. I recommend both, but the Blue book is a must.

In short, for me Grammatix>RR

note It is impossible to master the strategies in Grammatix with insufficient practice. More practice is the best advice you can get for the SAT.

Grammatix is useless for the Writing and Math sections. If you need to boost CR scores, use Grammtix. Other than that I recommend Kaplan for Writing and Barrons for Math.

Uhmm I made a whole post about my scores. I improved 20 or 30 in CR. Writing, I improved 60 NO THANKS TO GRAMMATIX. Math I improved 20.

Now, I just took the PSAT. I don’t know what my scores for those are yet. They might be higher because the scores I’m talking about are from practice tests under relaxed conditions.

Yeah, you’re right. Grammatix is only good for CR.

Trust me, if i can increase my 140 points, anybody else can improve drastically also, depending on their current score.

alien, I like Grammatix’s elimination strats. What was your score to start with? I am around a 550 right now and I seem to struggle answering passages that have like… 2 citation questions out of 8 (i.e. a passage from one of the last CR sections)

okay quitejaded, i trust u, i’m ordering RR right now

hey then what is the best of writing section i heard that the old Kaplan SAT II Writing is the best!!!

Anything that has real SAT problems is best. As long as you have the problems and a list of rules and practice them as often as you can, you’re set to go!

so what are the 4 pieces of information? :)

I think kaplan is easier than the actual sat

and barron’s math has too many errors/typos, but it’s good overall, if you have time, o yea, and its harder

hi, grammatx pushed my CR score up 100. BUt i did lots of practice of CR of old SATs on the side as well so that might could had been a factor. Key is that you review why you got your questions wrong.

btw, most helpful tip on grammatix: THERE IS ONLY ONE CORRRCT ANSWER. read more carefully if you narrow it down to like two -> taking that advice to heart was key for me. btw my CR went from 680->780. so ya im happy with that.

do you read the passages? for how long?

yea i tottally agree with tidal. grammatix is effective and concise so you dont need to spend hours and hours studying its strateges. it teaches to look out for the wrong answers and often during a test, you can eliminate all the wrong answers until you get down to the only answer. plus it gave me a lot more confidence because i just felt like i was in control. the downside of grammatix is that the wriiting section and the math section are completely useless but i think the writing is easy enough to get a 700+ w/o any studying and for math you can just do practice tests over and over again. (unforunately, very few of the practice problems from the blue book showed up on the Oct. SAT)

My CR score went from a 610 to a 750, all thanks to Grammatix. The best advice i ever got from grammatix is the happy/sad test.

Yes, I do read p assages. Grammatix says not to, but ever since I started reading passages (like RR says to do) I’ve been feeling more confident and been missing less questions.

Well, as I answer the questions, instead of just reaiding that one sentence, I read the whole paragraph. ANd I mark in my book. The markings don’t really help, but they make me feel better and I am more focused.

what i thought was really helpful for myself was reading the intro to the passage, looking at only the questions that had like ‘what did this word mean’ and then I find that line and underline that word. So when I go through the reading I pay more attention when I see an underlined word. it really saves time.

quitejaded, i read the passages too :). Good advice.

alien, so you’re against grammatix method??

Grammatix said not to read the passage, but read the intro and the ending sentences. I disagree here and I read the entire passage. It helped me raise me score. Read the passage + use the grammatix method and that maximises your score. One cannot go w/o the other.
