Comparing Princeton, arguably the best undergraduate education in the world, to an IIT is sheer idiocy. Yes, the IITs do offer a rigorous education in most Engineering concentrations but their quality can never be compared to that of Princeton’s. It will take many years and many Billions of dollars for the IITs to even catch up to, let alone exceed, Princeton’s quality of undergraduate education.

Billions? Surely you jest.

I am absolutely serious. Compare Princeton’s Student population, numbered at about 12,000, and its $12.7B endowment with a College that must maintain numerous campuses, far larger in terms of student population, on less than $100M, and you’ll begin to understand just how large the gap is between these two schools.

I believe you overestimate by several zeroes, but I shall elaborate tomorrow. 5 30 AM. Need to sleep.

@Aviral: That’s great! If MIT and JHU are okay with it then I’m sure that every other college is!

@bluebox
sorry , i just meant yale.
princeton is ahead of IITs , but maybe not if you consider the costs.
and it may have been because of low research outputs and no international students.
some small time rankings even place iits before princeton (so you could compare them.)

@PrincetonDreams :
How much do undergraduates actually use the endowment ?
At least in the talent of students IITs stands in one of the best.
You may find it hard to believe, but students who prepare for IITs get disconnected from their lives for a year or two (i am not elaborating, i am preparing for IIT myself.). the questions asked are way out of the league of anything high school students may know.(if you don’t believe me just search in Google for IITJEE previous years questions.). If India were a rich country, IITs would probably trump even MIT . IITs may not be very good universities, but they certainly have one of the most rigorous in engineering programs.

I am just going to show that I am studying in VMC , but for formal qualification i have opted for NIOS. (that is true as well).
But i accept i would have some difficulty , as i only have school reports from 9th and 10th , and my school marked us very low. in the last pre board , the highest was 87% (i got 82.4) and the highest in boards was 96.8%, average result hovering around 90%.
MIT told me they wouldn’t ask for something what my school does not have , and they were aware about jee preparation coachings.

I am also going to apply ED in Cornell, if I have a fair chance . Do you guys think i should ?
Also, about the ECs, i did participate in some ECs, but wasn’t honored or something. How do i tell them ?
(how to prove that i did?)
i got appreciation in speaking in cultural events , and standing ovation for some dramas.

(one of them was talked about for months)

Yes, I am not so ignorant as to not know that IIT students are some of the most remarkable in the world. Actually, it’s mainly due to this reputation that many end up getting accepted to prestigious graduate schools in the U.S.

As for Princeton, I have no idea how the daily life of a student is impacted by the school’s endowment but a simple calculation would show you that Princeton has about $2M to spend on every student there. That’s the highest Endowment per student figure in the world.

Guys-

Is anyone going to explain in academic circumstances that they’re going to a JEE prep college?

@Aviral:

Lol, my school was worse. I got a 70.00 in my 10th prelims and ended up with a 91 in my boards. hahahaha

As for your ECs Aviral, put in EVERYTHING you got.

And mention the standing ovation part too!

@PrincetonDreams
It does help , but undergraduate study does not involve much research , so too much resources do not make a remarkable difference ; good students do.

guys
can we stop fighting iit vs us colleges?
just google iit vs mit there are like a million entries.

It is fun to debate IIT vs. US colleges.

It doesn’t really help. =/

A very, VERY misleading statement. The endowment goes towards maintenance of the university. This includes faculty, food, housing, sports, research, and EVERYTHING else.

^ besides, i bet most of that endowment money is locked up in some investment. idk how it performed in recent yrs.

I know that the following is irrelevant to the ongoing discussion. But , …
OT: talking about endowments, i know harvard’s took a big hit, thanks to crook summers who became obama advisor to run govt of the rich, by the rich, for the rich. apparently he is headed back to harvard. when he was the president at harvard he made a remark to the effect that women were genetically inferior that prevents them from excelling in math and science. what a moron.

anyway, this is what harvard is all about: [The Larry Summers hall of shame - Great Recession | Economic Recession, Economic Crisis - Salon.com](http://www.salon.com/news/great_recession/?story=/politics/war_room/2010/09/25/larry_summers_top_ten_blunders)

Honestly, that guy’s a rogue, a crook.
