I got 680 CR, 750 M, 780 W, and an 11 essay. = 2210 total.
Plus I got 790 in sat biology M, and a 760 in sat math 2. I’m taking Sat us history in november. I’m looking towards a neurobiology major with a pre-med.

I have 4.83 GPA, straight A’s and have taken very rigorous schedules these past years (I’ve taken all AP classes at my school except for AP Art).

I have loads of EC’s (lots of leadership positions and volunteer-work and paid work experience), so I’m not in a weak position there I think.

I’m looking at top NON-IVY universities (Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, Northwestern, Rice, etc.).

Am I a good candidate? Also, my common app essay is looking really great. And supplements I’m not worried about- I’m pretty good writing essays and short answers.

I hope i don’t seem pretentious, because I’m not trying to.

no, you do not seem pretentious. pretentious people are those who literally have perfect stats and still bother to ask if they have a chance. lol. anyways, your chances seem solid for those universities. do you have any hooks that will give you a boost?

Yeah, CR is kinda low, but I think it is still in the middle 50% for all these schools. Your Writing is 75% plus, and your Math is at least 50 percentile.

Well, one of my leadership positions is that I am a member of the Youth Leadership Institute Within it, I’m a member of the Marin County Youth Commission, president of its Health committee, in which I try to change school health policies to improve services and lifestyle of my peers all over marin county. I’m also in Healthy Empowered Youth, an organization similar to the health committee (I joined this one too for extra aid for my health committee). I also collaborate within MCYC for education equity, running surveys, creating a “Green” change within schools.

I love YLI basically. It’s my strong point and my one of my UC essays is about it. But what do you mean “hooks?” Can you give examples?

Some hooks are like URM, legacy, athletic prowess, or even if your parents make donations to one of the universities. however, there are more in addition to these… these are just some examples.

I’m South Asian (Indian) and a guy, so i don’t im URM. My parents were born in India and went to college there. But we do make $160k family income, which is pretty high. I play varsity tennis and I’m its captain, but no USTA or whatever (I was in middle school, but that wont help). By the way, those hooks you stated seem unfair and minor for acceptance, but that’s my opinion.

and i completely agree with you. they are unfair. but, for example, URM is used to create diversity throughout the school. nd to be honest, being asian

Hhmm, it appears i did not finish my 2nd to last post. Well I was going to say that being asian won’t help as much because they tend to be the 2nd group that dominiates top schools. Sorry… Either way, you found your hook. lol.

is there a place on the common app that let you put your hook(ur the 1st gen to go to school in us)? I mean, it asks you how many years you live here, but I don’t think it actually asks you if you are the first gen does it?

^ There is no “Hook Section” but, in various places, you will have opportunities to write them. There is a first generation college box that you can tick I believe.
