I recently met with some friends from other areas in my state who go to so many academic competitions and I never realized just how many there were. The clubs at my school mostly only go to one academic competition a year (MUN, for example) due to our sponsors’ decisions, sometimes funding, and student participation. Even though I felt like I was as invested as possible in these clubs, I now feel like it’s not enough. Will colleges understand this or is this something I should address in my additional info section?
You absolutely should not mention this in your additional info section. You will sound like a whiner.
If you love academic competitions seek out individual ones. Or find one you’d like your school to attend and start a team.
But AC’s are by no means the only way to show off your skills and interests.
Neither of my kids were part of any academic competitions, and both are at selective colleges. There are plenty of other EC’s to show your passions and abilities.
“I was as invested as possible in these clubs” That’s what matters. Your GC can mention the school doesn’t participate in competitions. Many don’t. Winning something is nice, but don’t overestimate the need for an award. How you were involved and committed says more.
Agree with above. IMO the best course of action is to highlight the things you have done and don’t worry about the things you haven’t done.
Okay thank you all for your answers! They were really helpful! I was just concerned that they would feel like I wasn’t as invested as possible, even though I think I was, since I didn’t go to a ton of official events if that makes sense…sorry if it sounded like unjustified complaining! @happy1 @lookingforward @ClaremontMom @VickiSoCal
