My school uses a 10 point scale. What would my 4 point GPA be?

I know that converting grades isn’t always accurate and generally shouldn’t be done, but I’m curious about what my GPA might look like roughly. Is it super impressive? Decent but not something that will boost my profile? Or is it something that might lead to a rejection?

If anyone here has experience with 10 point scale grades, could I share my transcript with you and get your opinion on how it looks?

Do you live in the US?
What’s an A on that scale? A B?

No, I live outside the US.
We don’t use letter grades like A and B on our scale.

Unanswerable without context. For example, Brazil uses a 10 point scale, and 9.0+ is 4.0

Netherlands uses a 10 point scale and 8.0+ is 4.0. Or 7.5+ for those universities that don’t consider +/-

Universities in the US have people in admissions who are familiar with grading scales in other countries. If you apply to universities in the US, your grades will be understood in the context of what grades typically look like in your country. Also, university admissions also seems to understand grade scales used in some specialty or elite high schools compared to average high schools. It will all be taken in context.

As one example, I came from a high school outside the US in an area where no one had straight A’s, not even close. I got accepted to MIT with grades that would not have been sufficient if I had been coming from a typical US high school. That was okay, because my grades were compared to other students in the high school and the province that I was coming from.

If you want to get into the very top universities in the US (Harvard, Princeton, MIT, Stanford level) then you should be pretty close to the #1 top student in your high school, or at least one of a handful of top students. For some other universities in the US, top 10% or top 20% might be required. For some other universities, top half might be sufficient.

Do you know how your grades compare to other students in your high school? What sort of universities are you considering?

And of course, for international students applying to universities in the US, another issue that comes up is: What is your budget?
