i definitely want to major in public relations because that’s my interest, and i’ve had a lot of practice in the field through my dad’s previous jobs in football pr and helping him with press releases, etc. however, i’ve gotten really interested in subjects like new urbanism, social anthropology, and cities… i want to basically be someone who lays out the city, how it will be structured, where neighbourhoods will be. i assume there’s studying public policy or urban studies or a multi-disciplinary field… what should i major in that could lead to a job in this field?

Remember, most cities are already designed, laid out, structured and the neighborhoods are where they are.

You could have a career in urban planning, but adopt a more rational idea of what the work entails. Instead of laying out cities, you’ll be laying out parking lots and parking garages.

Lots of schools offer urban planning as a major, so take a look at the curriculum.

I’d say if you are interested in designing the sort of things you mentioned, go to school for Architecture or Civil Engineering.
