Anyone have any experience going to university of Pittsburgh?
Both my kids went there. What do you want to know?
My son will be a junior this fall. Any specific questions? One thing he has been pleased with is advising. Also the campus is a small city feel.
What major? housing? Any specific concerns?
Has he secured housing? My D committed to transfer there but couldn’t get housing, and since it was July and an unfamiliar city, she didn’t want to deal with trying to find an apartment.
You have a lof of Pitt experts on this forum… ask away!
We got an airbnb that hosts students from Pitt and Carnegie Mellon. Fortunately. It was a struggle to find housing.
Is it easy to make friends. he’s coming in as a Sophomore and we wondered how friendly the campus is. Also – any clubs that are good to check out? Thanks.
He’s interested in Philosophy but also Political Science.
What’s the library like?
My kids had no trouble making friends but they also both started as freshmen. My daughter did end up with a friend group that was completely different than the one she had freshman year so it seems people are open to making new friends. As for clubs, both got involved based on their interests. My daughter took 4 years of Chinese and did study abroad in China. She was very involved in the Chinese club and was an officer her junior and senior year. My son did mainly intramurals and was in a weightlifting club.
Does he have housing? Some sophomore housing is apartment style but it might be easier to meet people in a standard dorm
However it’s kinda late for housing so what’s their plan?
There are places in academic building where people study and Congregate and also the first floor of Cathy of course. Might be easier to meet people there than the library
Do they game? There are gaming clubs
It is currently undergoing a big renovation but is still open. My S19 studied there a lot as well as at the cathedral. He graduated with a double major, a BS neuroscience and a BA in History and Philosophy of Science (HPS). He LOVED the HPS major and the philosophy department.
Pretty much the consensus #1 department in the world for Philosophy of Science!
We had no housing BUT finally got an Airbnb that housed students a mile away. I think that’s the best bet to study at Cathy (and it looks amazing!).
An Airbnb for the full year? Are there no other options?
That way my thought too, there are a ton of fb pages for apartments in the area.
We live in CA so it was hard to figure out anything about apartments from across the country since we were warned about some slumlords. The Airbnb is a house that has 5 other students and a good rating.
Did your daughter do a year in China or a semester and was the program through Pitt or another institution?
She went through the Pitt Study Abroad office. It was a summer program that included two courses and an internship. The program was joint with other colleges so when she got to China there were students from many other schools. Her closest friends not from Pitt went to Duke. They tried to match the internship to the students interests - hers was in management consulting. As for the courses, everyone took Chinese and were placed into levels by ability and then they had a choice for the second course. She chose a course on Chinese economics since she was an economics major. Note this was all before Covid so I’m not sure if the same program is still available now.
