Does this mean - no chance or there is a possibility.

Waitlist should be treated as reject.

However, if the school and the applicant’s major underyield, the school may offer admission to the applicant.

You can check the school’s common data set for past years WL numbers (home many on list and how many offered).

No clue about NC State but % varies dramatically. It is pretty much always quite low, though.

A waitlist is a school saying we cannot accept you. So for now, yes, it’s a rejection.

However, the school is a business. They need enough butts in seat, overall and in certain majors.

If they mis-guess their yield…i.e. not enough people accept vs. their projection, then they need more.

So they take kids that they didn’t accept for whatever the reason and they use you as an insurance policy. These are typically kids that they know could be successful there but for whatever reason, were not able to accept them now.

The smart strategy is - is get on the WL, send your LOCI if one is desired, and then find #2, fall in love, and if NCSU comes back, you probably won’t want to go anyway.

But yes, it’s a rejection for now. Hard to hear but the truth.

In the most recent CDS (two years ago), they offered 7439 spots and and 2689 accepted a spot on the WL. They did not note how many were admitted - they left that box blank.

But at least two years ago, they WL a tad less than half of who they admitted, and more students than eventually enrolled. So they take so they have a huge safety margin.

For your student’s best mindset, sign up but then move on and put it out of mind and fall in love elsewhere.

I don’t want to give false hope, but this was my son’s situation last year, and he did get off the waitlist. I think it was late May or early June. He received an email from admissions offering him a spot. He did not end up taking it, but it happened. Good luck to your son (mine was not engineering, fyi).

Was he able to login in to mypack portal before getting off the waitlist? Asking for a friend, she is on the waitlist but has access to mypack portal but still on waitlist.

It is, there are directions in the NC State threads for admission this year around the time decisions came out in January and March.

Has anyone heard from NC State yes or no after being on waitlist?

I know one person IRL accepted from the waitlist last week. In state. Majoring in something related to data science (I can’t remember the exact major).

Another friend of D24 accepted off the waitlist a few days ago. Also in-state. Majoring in something related to animal science.
