my son's reaction to Jersey Shore

S1 from Chicago came home for a spring break, brining with him his best friends at college: two boys and a girl. They are also renting an apartment together next year. really nice kids. would be thrilled of any one or all of them were to be mine.

None of his friends have been to NJ, so one evening, they decided to get the full “Jersey” experience and decided to watch JerseyShore. I heard about this a lot, but I never watched it before. So, I stayed around (they did not mind) for the show.

Half way into the show, I jokingly mentioned “you know as a parent, when I see something like this, the thought that occurs to me is , what if my kid brings one of those home?”

To that, one of S1’s friends replied “what if one of my friends brings one of those with him or her” then others said “yeah, or my brother or sister!”

I thought S1 friends’ reaction was hilarious.

OK. I apologize if it all sounds elitist.

But, would any of you be thrilled if your kid brings home one of those on Jersey Shore?

If these characters are our folk heroes, we are really in trouble as a nation.

Hmmm. Well I judge by actions so I wouldn’t care where they were from, what they came from, or what they looked like but…having seen a few episodes of Jersey Shore and having seen some of the behavior that goes on, I would take that as an indication of character or lack thereof and I would not be thrilled if my child brought one home.

I don’t believe that the cast of the Jersey Shore is a great example of young adults anywhere in this country , let alone NJ. I don’t really buy into the " folk hero " status of any of them…most viewers are indulging in a guilty pleasure by watching this type of television. I have a great deal of faith that none of our girls either relate to any of them , or would " bring them home " . They have better values than that.
I might also mention that we live at " the Jersey Shore " though much further south than where this show is filmed and our kids and their peers are mortified , particularly the ones who attend schools out of state that so many people think this is what represents our area.

The show is NOT representative of the majority of NJ or even the majority of people at the Jersey shore. Plus many of the members of the cast are not even FROM NJ.

I would be very surprised if any of my kids brought home someone who resembled (in looks, actions, speech, intelligence, maturity, depth, manners) any member of the cast. But I would know there must have been something to attract them to that person and I would search for that. But otherwise, I would know it certainly would not last.

by the way, if it was not clear in my original post, we live in NJ. Central, inland about 10 miles from the shore line. NJ as I know does not resemble anything I saw in that show!

I grew up in central Jersey at the north end of THE Jersey Shore (we never say it without the “the” ) lived most of my life in North Jersey near Newark, and now mostly down at the Southernmost end. and I agree, Jersey Shore is in no way representative–and almost none of them are Jerseyans.

I agree that most of the kids watching it do so because it is like watching a car wreck and they can’t tear their eyes away. When the show started, while it was still very over the top, it wasn’t quite as offensive as it has become. My kids have noted the downhill slide and are less interested than they were in the beginning.

My D goes to UMD in College Park and there are many students there from New Jersey. When we were there for Parent Weekend I saw flyers for a discussion series on “The Real Jersey Shore”. I was happy to see that there was some intelligent discussion going on that might help to dispel any stereotype of people who live on the Jersey Shore.

I believe that many, if not all, of the cast members are not even from New Jersey!

I can’t help but wonder what the parents of those cast members think about their kids being on the show? I would move out of the country!

I would be so embarrassed if any of the cast were my flesh and blood. I have actually watched that show and thought I couldn’t tell you who was who other than Snooki ( since she seems to be plastered all over magazine covers and on other shows I do watch
I find the girls to be vulgar and trashy.
There was a rumor around a year ago that MTV was looking to film a season in a beach town down here in Cape May County , and people were in an uproar.
I know that many Italian-Americans in this state are pretty offended by the stereotypes they exploit…shudder
