What do I do when “my state” don’t have my professions?! I need to know more before I talk to the school…

I’m not sure I understand your question. If you’re asking about public universities, you can major in something else that is related and go to graduate school in your field elsewhere. If your state has an exchange agreement with neighboring states you may be able to find the major at another school and attend there for in-state tuition, even though you are not a state resident. You can also move to another state where your major is offered and work there until you are at least 24 (I think) AND live there for a minimum of one year (some states may vary) and then attend for in-state tuition rates. You can also attend a private school where residency doesn’t affect tuition rates.

What Im saying is that I would really like to major in Photojournalism and do so in the great state of New Mexico, but there is no university or college that offers that…

Photojournalism is a specific major that most colleges don’t have. However many colleges offer a journalism major with a concentration in photojournalism. Look into that.

doesn’t…

Perhaps your major exists in Arizona, Colorado or Texas.

The U of NM offers a B.A. in journalism through the Department of Communication and Journalism, and a BFA in photography through the College of Fine Arts. Even if you don’t want to double major )a BFA is extremely studio intensive) there will be plenty of photography courses you can take. It may also be possible to design your own major, perhaps through the journalism department, so that you can get credit for a significant body of work in photojournalism. This would help you develop the portfolio you would need to apply to graduate school in photojournalism.

The U of NM is large enough to meet your needs if you give it a chance. They may not seem to have exactly what you’re looking for but most schools do not offer an undergraduate major in photojournalism. If you connect with the right advisers and professors in the journalism and photography departments, you can make it happen!

Avg student changes her major more than once. So unless you are 110% it’s what you want go into, don’t worry. Study in-state and if after a yr or two it’s still what you want to go into transfer.
