work- feed dinner to a lady at a nursing home once a week for an hour

essays: dragonboating, feeding at nursing home, and the below

parents divorced + troubled childhood? i dont feel this should be used to my advantage, but i suppose its worth knowing

You have no hook nor something that makes you stand out from the 20000 apps. you have a 45% chance

How isn’t:

SAT 1600 (first time was 1520, 720 verbal)
800 on math iic, 800 chem, 800 bio M, 800 writ
5 on chem, calc bc, stats, phys-c-mech, us history

and USAMO a hook?

I’d say that you have an 90% chance of getting into Harvard.

was the USAMO for AMC 10 or AMC 12? If AMC 12, then you have a hook.

I don’t think it matters. USAMO is USAMO, regardless of how you get there.

bubchub, you are definately in. (I hope you get in also because if you don’t then I will certainly not either).

50/50. Half of 1600 are rejected. Most accepted have a strong hook This year’s freshman class blows my mind! It just keeps getting harder.

half of 1600 rejected? thats because they have other flaws. This kid is good in every respect. You are in, but be careful because theres always a chance something could go wrong.

i’d be confident if i were you

…

I have reason to doubt that 20,000 applicants would be participants in the USAMO.

Also, knowing your stats, bubchub, I’m almost certain that I’m going to be rejected now :(

Anyways, I seriously think you’ll get in fairly easily.

yeah, you’re in, I say. Although colleges say they reject about 60% of 1600 kids, these kids have some flaws. For example, a person I knew had average GPA w/ 1600. But you have great everything.

Weren’t you applying EA to stanford?

Anyway, incredible stats. Dragonboating is awesome, thanks for sending me that video clip.

just-forget-me: haha nah i was just putting my stats on the stanford thread since i live really close to stanford (just like 5 miles down the expressway).

everyone else-
one flaw i had is the interview (from my point of view anyway)…i got her to chuckle a little bit but i gave the impression that i was very very unconfident and shy (and im usually not…unless under extreme pressure). and if you guys don’t know what dragonboat is, it kicks it

Interviews only matter if you’re a borderline applicant. As NSM has stated in past threads, if you are borderline and had a good interview, that would tip you towards being accepted. And, needless to say, the reverse is true as well.

But you are definitely not borderline…so if you did decently in your interview, that definitely won’t hurt you. Even if you did badly in your interview, that wouldn’t really hurt you either…

frick the supermoderator took away the weblink to the DB video (why?TOS) … anyways if you guys want the video just e-mail me and i’ll send you the link. really, dragonboating kicks butt

hey bub, i posted on your “any other SF/bay area in here.” I’m going to be completely honest and up front because that’s what you’re expecting. So don’t hate me!

USAMO isn’t a hook if 245 students made it. If you’ve made it to IBO like my friend kelly harris (from sacramento, i’m hanging out with her next week, she’s awesome) who is also a rickoid, and won a medal at 15, sure.

awards on the high school level are not worth mentioning.
working one hr a week is barely sufficient.
there’s a difference between researching siRNA and doing busy, trivial lab work such as gel electrophoresis or looking on pubmed for promoter sequences.
if you describe me your actual activities at the lab, maybe then i’d give you a better evaluation.

" feed dinner to a lady at a nursing home once a week for an hour"

Why do you accept pay for that? Sounds like something that would be simply community service. I imagine your feeding some feeble old woman and then accepting $10 from her trembling hand for the service. This doesn’t paint a nice picture of you.

i put research on my application too. I don’t know what your role is in a particular project, but I’m heading the most important project at my lab. I’m collaborating on the same playing field with two respective, published postdocs. I discussed with them my observation with the data and we throw ideas back and forth. I designed a novel protocol to analyze steroids in liver, brain, and serum samples, troubleshooting along the way. 2 weeks ago, I mailed my 2nd NIH grant requesting 2 million dollars for 5 years to find a treatment for this incurable disease called SLOS. I’ve been in this lab for 2 years, giving me the seniority of all intern. I worked 20 hrs starting september of this year, and have been working 10 hr each week since the I started.

that’s a big difference from running PCR, preparing buffer, extracting DNA, cloning, mini prepping, looking for specific sequences, running gel electrophoresis once or twice a week.

even with this supposed “hook,” i still don’t think i will get in becaues of my low SAT score. I don’t have a 1600, and my SAT IIs are not perfect 800s.

but props to you, you’re more well rounded than i am :)

USAMO isn’t a hook that will seal the deal, but it’s a hook that will sway the decision a lot. This is especially true, since Harvard tries to semi-recruit people so they can maintain their dominance of the Putnam competition, although in reality, just making USAMO probably isn’t good enough to make you “recruitable” in terms of mathematical ability.

Still, you’re probably in.

lol…Harvard’d have to recruit those who only qualified for USAMO because all the IMO medalists will be at MIT. JKJKJK!! both gabe and tianka went to harvard; harvard has a better theoretical math dept than MIT. linda went to MIT.
