My Teachers Won't Let Me Self-Study - Suggestions?

Today a friend and I approached my teacher about reserving a test so we could self-study AP Psychology this year and were flat-out shot down. She thought we were too young (freshman, apparently AP Psych shouldn’t be attempted until at least “junior year”) for the subject matter, the test would be too difficult without some sort of background in psychology, and “three” [isn’t the test in May?] months is too short a time to learn the material in. Supposedly she has “never” seen a student with the work ethic to study an AP. Psychology is a bit of a passion of mine, and at the moment I crave the challenge of a high-level class. My next semester is mostly required courses (PE, basic computer use, etc.) and will be extremely boring, academically. I’ve been thinking about this for several weeks, and checked out the highly-recommended Barron’s prep book, and think I’m more than capable of this.

So my question is, how do I convince her? Does anyone have some suggestions?

[Registering for AP Courses & AP Exams](<a href=“College Board - SAT, AP, College Search and Admission Tools”>Register for AP Exams – AP Students | College Board)

Link her to CC :D

You could also try going to the counselor and asking. The counselor might let you register. You could also go to the person who registers people for the exams and pay them directly. That way you cut out the teacher entirely and the school still buys an exam for you. Thats what I used to do, worked great.

You may want to take her advice. As a freshman, you should be getting involved with school activities. Colleges may not accept a freshman AP score anyway. See if she has any alternate suggestions to keep you from being bored.

As long as you pay for the test yourself, the school AP coordinator should order one for you… how does your teacher have any control?

I’m not really sure. She’s my gifted teacher, and I’m assigned there for directed study. We thought the guidance counselor would be able to order our tests, so we asked to leave directed study (a very loose version of study hall) to see our GC but the teacher told us she was the person we should talk too about it.

That’s most likely not true.

Get you parent involved to reassure the teacher you will do the work and take the test this spring instead of flaking out the last minute.
Plus keep it quiet, schools don’t like breaking “rules” or making exceptions.
If your classes are too easy then you need to go to cc or the local university to get ahead in math and science.

I take AP Psych as a freshman and got a 5. It’s totally doable.
Go to ask the counselor (choose one you know the best or the one that is more helpful), if s/he won’t let you take it, go to ask principal. They will at least listen to you. If the school still doesn’t agree administering the test to you, you can always go to other schools.
Just contact AP Service and ask for other schools.
Good Luck.

There was a thread on this last year. The OP got a 5.

There’s an option of testing at another school too, but I would suggest going through your school.
