My tennis skill sucks. How to improve it?

Hey, I’ve been playing for 9 years, and I’m still awful. Lessons help, but if you actually want to get good, you should be dedicated. If you’re not a naturally athletic person, you may have more difficulty, but you can still become relatively good by practicing (with instruction)

My serve’s awful. It goes off the racket and bounces very slowly off the ground. My footwork is terrible. Ican’t seem to back up with deepball and cannot run fast enough with fast ball

THe best way to improve your tennis skills is to talk about your skills in CC rather than practicing. :p

Do you acually have any atheletic skill in any other sport? Tennis is way hard as it requires quickness, coordination, endurance, and a degree of power.

A few months is not a long time to spend on a sport. If you are not a “natural”, it takes several years to attain proficiency in almost any physical endevour.

You get to Wimbelton the same way you get to Carneige Hall; practice, practice, practice.

Do you realize how long it takes most people to get a half-decent serve? Most of the people on my school’s team who have been playing for the same amount of time as you can’t even manage an overhead serve, so they have to toss it underhand. I agree with the other posters, blogging about it won’t help.

What is underhand serve?
Okay here is what I’ve been found after 2 hours of playing tennis today: I’ve watched the pros play too much (too fast) that today when I was playing with my friends, they hit the ball slowly so my swing was fast and missed the ball all the time.
How to fix it?

michael chang used the underhand serve (also called the spoon serve) to beat ivan lendl in the french open. it is just a serve you serve underhand (i dont know how to explain it anyway else). but the overhead serve is the best way to serve.

only way you’ll really be able to improve is to find a certified coach. if no money, offer yardwork or somethin in the stead. ( i did yardwork for tennis lessons…)

I’ve been playing tennis for about, hm 7 years or maybe 8? And I was even ranked #1 in my age group at times. I made Varisty tennis last year, but due to some “drama” (lol) I chose not to be on the team.
I suggest working on your footwork first. Footwork is really important in tennis. You don’t want to be just running around the court diving for the ball. Alot of things I saw intermediate players (not saying you’re intermediate) doing at tryouts was, they didn’t keep their eyes on the ball. All they did was try to hit the ball as hard as they could, and all they were doing was hitting home runs.
Watch videos of Roger Federer’s footwork. It’s really amazing. Also, you want to have the correct grip. I think that footwork and your grip basically leads to your OWN stroke. Don’t worry about hitting topspin or anything right now. And also, you should follow through on your strokes, and don’t lose your balance. I can’t even tell you how many people lost their balance because they didn’t follow through on their strokes…hilarious lol.
but yeah, work on your footwork and grip first
And what are yuor strengths and weaknesses?

B-E AGGRESSIVE and just keep practicing.

i also suck at tennis. it took me two years to move up from the bottom of the ladder of my school’s team. push ups help with serving fast.
