I did horrible my freshman year,I was in a mentally and verbally abusive household and was unable to handle it and my grades reflected it. My gpa was about a 1.9. I failed or received a D in every elective but managed to make B’s in every core class expect one. I plan on retaking that class online this coming year. Sophomore year my gpa was about a 3. I plan to work extra hard this coming year. How helpful is my upward trend? I want I attend xula, spelman or possibly a school Florida if tht fails. I will put in over 75 community service hours. I know it’s not a lot but bright futures would help me a lot if I can’t get into xula or spelman.

I am not familiar with the schools you are interested in, but I quickly looked up their stats. You are in a unique situation. I think if you keep up the grades (try and get at least a 3.5 junior year) and write something in your application explaining the low grades freshman year. XULA and Spelman seem reasonable, do well on the SAT’s/ACT’s. That being said I will be honest your lack of EC’s will hurt you. From my understanding you have no leadership and community service to date. 75 hours of community service is good, but not great (many people have at least 200). Try and also do something with the rest of your summer. Good luck!
