my useless life

went to canada and completed elementry up until grade 9 in high school, i then went back to hong kong which is the country of my origin, as i was born there, now i’ve just recently completed high school here and to my dispair there’s no college for anyone to get into, and the chance of -what are the requirements for getting into one? what is the admission scheme like? ( eg: how well must i perform in high school to get in?)

there is a university, though the reality is that there are 140000 students and the universities here only provide less than one third of the required admission demend, it sad but true T_T

i do have canadian citizenship and i did graduate from an elementry school in canada and even went to high school until grade 9, however i’m not born in canada although i do have citizenship, but i want to know what are the chances that i’ll be able to get into a college, i don’t care what college, as long as i can get into one, i’ll be saved from a life of eternal proverty in h.k.

update:

ii got my marks today, they were far worst than i have predicted, let’s just say i pass english with flying colours, i have no comment on the others, as i’m too depressed to write anything right now, i studied and studied 11 hours per day for the past 7 months on comerence and chinese, hoping to achieve atleast a passing grade; on the MOCK EXAM i achieve a B and c, on the national exam (real thing) i failed.

i memorizing the entire book for commerence, i purchased chinese excercise books and practise and practise, i’ve spend my entire year studying and studying, and i got an F.

back in canada i never worked hard, and even then i could pass exams without studying, when i do work hard all i got was an F, i wouldn’t complain if i didn’t work hard, but i did, and so did alot of my classmates who studied with me on commerence and chinese, now they got an F, and os did i, we were all surprised, why? why?

besides english, all the subjects are taught and in chinese, which i have a terrible time with as i’m no longer as proficient in as i used to be in my native language due to the years i spent in canada, i was forced to learn everything from scratch within a 2 year time limit.

i can do factory/bookkeeping/cashbook accounting, but i was given an F because i couldn’t do parnership and debt accounts.

i stidied basic commerence book by frank (jogan?), almost memorized the entire book, was able to answer questions as pricise and as close to textbook format, and i receive an F

i failed chinese, i beat myself over it, but i can only learn so much in such a short time. i’m to blame.

i was forced from canada back to hk, my parents blissfully thought hk would be a better place for me to study, with complete disregard of the fact that everying is taught in chinese and that i barely rememebr how to write my name in chinese.

too many students, no college save for few university, can you imagine how the marking scheme here is like? the national exam pits you against every student in hk all at once, neat?

in canada my old school print out their own exams papers, even a bad apple who comes to school once in a while pass the exam with ease and was able to go to college, how is this possible?

as for today:
i went to a student exchange convention today, with my marks i was rejected face flat, one canadian representive sympatized with me and ask me how i got these marks, i simply told him that save for english, all the subjects i studied were in chinese, which wouldn’t have been a problem had i not went to canada and spend 6 years, as this cause me to forget a good chunk of my knowlege in chinese, he stared at me and comment how difficult it must have been, and proceed to hand me a form to fill, he claims he can get me to where i want to go…college…for a price, or a fortune, i left saying i’ll think about it, and the kindest thing on this glommy day was him shaking my hand and tell me not to give up, i almost cry.

i finally understood why some ppl have to try much harder to achieve what others conisdered taken for granted, i cried and cried…i have no regrets, i tired as hard as i could, there was nothing more than i could do. tonight me and my classmates are going to have a sleepover and i’ll be bringing some tissue, during this entire ordeal we studied and test eachother and took other optional mock exams, we all got Bs, now only one of use made it with 1D, tonight we’re gonna cry, as for me…

with only 1 A in english, and a passing for CIT, what are my chances?

thank you, as you can see my eng is not very good, but when you learn a second language i guess it’s difficult for one to remember his native language, i earned third place in the national CHI essay competition when i was 7 years old in elementry in hk, perhaps my parents thought i still got the stuff, of course i protested but they didn’t listen…

anyways i’m not shifting all the blames on chinese language, but i only had 2 years to learn everything from scarch and had i been given more time things would have been different, my parents pull me back to hk in grade 9 and because of my age i had to jump a year in hk and start straight in the last 2 years of high school, which i had a terrible time with but i picked up chinese and manage to pull off a above passing mark in the non-national exam in all the courses for the previous year and this year, but when the real thing comes i never imagined it would turn out like this…

the canadian i met yesterday called me this morining and reminded me that i was accepted, he said i could go to these adult high school courses where i redo grade11 in college, after which i will do the provincal exam there and maybe i’ll get into a college, of couse he said i should head back to canada to confirm things and plan out steps first…i do’t know, it’s just too much, the thing is i can see their frowning faces when they see my report card, how can i get a B in mock exams issued by the school board, and fail the national exam which was also conducted by the same board so miserablely…

i really don’t want to show them my marks as this is not all i can do, heck back in canada i got an A and B and eng and social studies, but ppl don’t see you for who you are nor do i expct them to listen as they rightfully don’t need to do so, they’ll look at the six subjects and seeing that i pass only 2 of them, will they rejected me outright? i can show them my previous grade exams which were terrific, same as for my mock exam this year (pre- national exam created by the same school board) which i also did very very well (no fails with ABC), i have a job reference for storekepping, and i do charity work for govt and completed their job training courses, all of this, will it help in any way?

god help me i don’t know what to do! T_T

why not go to a community college?

Dude, I’m in a bad situation too, but not as bad as yours.http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=379983</a></p>

Anyways, I guess it’ll help you during life, because it’s a life lesson. A failure is not really a bad thing, just know how to persevere.

Wow, I can’t really relate, but I have a lot of sympathy for you. It should make us ABCs (or ABT whatever) really appreviative.

will i even be given a chance to take on an entrace exam for a community college? will they reject me when i show them my HKCEE marks?

will i be givan a chance to prove myself at all?

thank for the help.

God… well, I’m not a sadist.
I’ve nearly forgotten all of the Chinese when I left China a few years ago, so…

didn’t graduate in canada, only went up to grade 9, and back then i was never the type who studied hard, straight Cs if you know what i mean. i went back to hk, i knew that if i don’t work hard i’ll end up a begger or worst, but i never thought the marking scheme would be this harsh…when i recieved a B in both chinese and commerence in the mock exam, i knew already then that i’ll atleast achieve a passing on these subjects if i conintue on my efforts from here, i dumped accounting and math because they’re too time consuming, and i knew the importance of passing chinese thus i put my heart and soul to it hoping to get a passing in the nationals. i always reminded myself that if i get cocky just because i got a B in mock exam, i’ll screw up for sure in the real thing, i kept on telling that myself that everyday and studied as hard as i can, i even neglect english in hopes that my chance of passing chinese will increase somhow.
i guess i never expected an F, i thought if i work hard i’ll be rewarded with the fruits of my labour, but in the end i guess it all comes down to the fact that i’m the one and only person to be blamed for this. i accept my failures, i completely understand that i’m to blamed and noone else needs to know anything or give any symphathy, as they rightfully don’t need to do so, an F is an F, i have nothing more to say. i failed. T_T

when i go back to canada, which i will in maybe a year’s time, do you think it’ll help if i show them my mock exam score and my previous year’s report card? i got A,Bs,Cs…etc and no fail on my mock exam, and my previous year at the same hk school (equivalent of grade11 in usa) i also achieved similar grades; so do you think these will improve my chances in someway?

also i was told when i called the canadian school board that i can retake grade11/12 dispite that i grad high school in hk, now they didn’t say weather it was optional or not and comment that “it depends on the individual and the school they’ll be going to…”, but for my age, which is 20 (it’s a long story, i was already 16 in grade 9), should i consider retaking grade11/12? i know i’m problely missing something here so i’d be delighted if someone here can inform me a little more on this matter.

thanks for the help, thank you. T_T

Let me explain somethings about how things work in the US (can’t say for Canada).

If you come to the US, there is a test called the GED–this stands for General Educational Development.

If you are at least 18 years old, and you can pass this test, you are given the equivalent of a high-school diploma here in the US. You might think this would be a difficult test–but it’s really not too difficult. It’s easier than the tests in China–especially if you haven’t taken Chinese for awhile.

Once you pass a GED, you can go to a community college–I would think this would be the same even for the equivalent of a community college in Canada.

Here’s more info on this test, including a free study guide:
http://www.studyguidezone.com/gedtest.htm</a></p>

Since this counts as a high-school diploma, it means you can also get financial aid as a result. This means you can go to a community college on financial aid if you can get admitted and then get a visa. From there, do well and you can transfer to a good 4-year college or university.

Take heart–and have confidence that life is going to get better for you.

Best of success.

hmmm i see, io have citizenship so i don’t need to pay for the visa or any international student fee right?

um hello? thanks T_T

Are you referring to US citizenship or Canadian?
