Mystery red mark - should I be alarmed?

Anyone want to play Mystery Diagnosis?

I have a red mark - about the size of a quarter - on my lower leg - above ankle. It does not itch, is not raised or scaly, not swollen.

First noticed it on Wednesday. Not really improving. Never had anything like this before. I’d go with bug bite except there is no itching and no bump.

WebMD says skin cancer is a possibility - but it literally appeared overnight - so I kind of doubt that.

Considering calling dermatologist in am for appt - but hate to pay $50 co-pay to learn I have a weird bug bite.

Thoughts?

It could be a tick bite. Wait until you’ve had it for a week. If it’s still there, go see your PCP.

Lyme disease? (I think that’s what a tick bite might cause.)

I agree with rosered55. The typical Lyme rash is a bullseye red mark, but there are variants and it doesn’t always appear. It would be a good idea to be tested for Lyme disease, rockvillemom. If you have been exposed to Lyme, early treatment is crucial.

No tick. I looked at tick bite photos - and this looks different - not the same bullseye marking. I’m torn between thinking it is nothing and being worried about skin cancer.

I started a thread a few weeks ago about a red mark on my lower, outside leg above my ankle. It is perfectly round, about the size of a quarter. Looks kind of like a ringworm but is not raised, does not hurt or itch. I just happened to see it in the full-length mirror one day. Because it’s on the outside of my leg, I do not see it when I look down and don’t even know it’s there. I first noticed it about three years ago. Mine is sort of a pink ring with normal skin in the middle. Let me know what you find out. I have intended to make an appointment with a dermatologist but never remember during business hours. My self diagnosis (although mine does not look as bad as the photos): http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000833.htm

Hmm…mine is just red - no ring. It looks like the kind of red mark you get when you cross your legs or ankles - but it does not fade away. Since it appeared overnite - I think it did - bug bite would make sense - but no itching or bump makes it not seem like a bug bite. I need to stop looking at gross skin cancer pictures now. I guess I spend the $50 and go see the dermatologist.

Is it hot or warm to the touch? Pain ?I’d go to a PCP first .

Another possibility is a spider bite. Better to be safe and have it checked out.

I’ll throw in a possibility too. Maybe you slept on a quarter. Did you check your bed?

Not hot or warm to touch. Spider bite - interesting. Slept on a quarter - since tuesday nite? Funny, but no.

When’s the last time you had a full skin examination from a dermatologist? If it’s more than a year, this could be a good reason to get one now.

Spend the money and get yourself checked out. The Lyme rash isn’t always a bullseye, and you don’t want to wait if it is Lyme.

@musicmom1215: You noticed this mark three years ago and haven’t seen a doctor yet? I think it’s time. Chances are its just pigment or something, but what the heck. Don’t keep yourself in suspense any longer.

@rockvillemom, keep us posted!

Do you have a cvs minute clinic near your home? About two weeks ago I had what looked like a bug bite (red mark) and it turned out to be shingles. Was put on anti virals meds immediately. Get it checked out. The cvs clinic is walkin.

Starting to think it is more a bruise than a skin issue - although it is red, not black and blue, and does not hurt. I’m calling primary care doctor rather than dermatologist, I think.

Do you have any flu-like symptoms?

I’d go to my PCP, not a dermatologist, unless I had a history of skin cancer or other skin problems.

It could be cellulitis, which is a bacterial skin infection. My H had this–two, very red marks on his lower leg. We were at our summer place where there’s a walk in clinic. H went there to have it checked out–clinic doc started H on antibiotics and did an ultrasound to make sure it wasn’t a blood clot. I’d go to your PCP and have it checked out. Antibiotics did the trick–redness was gone by the third day.

I had cellulitis, starting in my ankle, and it was accompanied by fever and chills at first, with a generalized redness that spread up my leg, pain, etc. Definitely an emergency. Doesn’t sound like this, although presumably there are different presentations.

Worth getting checked out.
