Naclo

Can some one tell me how much value qualification to NACLO Open round would give an applicant to HYPS and MIT admissions?

I don’t know what you mean by “qualification to its open round.” The first round is open to literally anybody. The second round only takes people with good scores on the first round. Although “open round” sounds more like the first round, I assume your question is asking about qualifying for the second. I’m afraid that the answer is “not much.” It’s nice, but it is not memorable. If passing that test cutoff is the strongest extracurricular on your resume, I’m afraid that your chances are even slimmer than most applicants’.

If you make the ILO team, though. That does stand out.

Well, thats not the only qualification, there are other accomplishments as well. My question is will this qualification to invitational round add any value to the application, if you have other national level awards as well.

Every accomplishment, no matter how large or small, “adds value.” But, how much value is anyone’s guess. You are looking for an answer that only an Admissions Director can give you, as your file does not exist in a vacuum; it gets compared to all other students who are applying in a given year. May I suggest you read: [Applying Sideways | MIT Admissions](Applying Sideways | MIT Admissions). While the advice is for MIT, it equally applies to Harvard.

Assuming you mean you got to the 2nd round that was announcted yesterday, I would certainly put it on your Common App for next year if you are a junior. If you are a senior in the RD pool, you could drop admissions an email. It can’t hurt, and might help. I think it is a good accomplishment – my kid took the test and did not make the top 200 cutoff (no one in our state made it).
