Nagoya and Kyoto Japan

I’m tagging along on my husband’s work-related trip to Japan in a few weeks. His meeting is in Nagoya (we’ll be there about a week), and we’re adding a couple of days in Kyoto. I would love suggestions about what to see and do, where to eat, and where to stay in Kyoto (the Nagoya reservation has been made). I’ve never been to Japan, so any and all tips are welcome!

My son and g/f stayed at a traditional hotel in Kyoto. He said it was the highlight of trip. I will try to find out the name. He took many pictures of the gardens. Have fun!

Thanks, bookworm! Anyone else? There are usually tons of responses on travel threads!

We stayed in a ryokan in Nara and went to Kyoto for the day. It worked out fine, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend doing it that way. (We knew a professor in Nara, who took us around to see the sights there - the deer in the park that you can pet are very cute.) I loved staying in ryokans, but both the ones we stayed at (arranged by local friends) were run by people who didn’t speak a word of English. It made figuring out what to do when challenging. Time for your bath! Time for dinner! Time for breakfast! Put on your yakata! But I think we did all the things we were supposed to. :)

Possible day trips for you would be [Himeji Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Himeji Castle - Wikipedia) or the theater in Osaka: [National Bunraku Theatre?| Japan Arts Council](<a href=“Japan Arts Council”>Japan Arts Council)

in Kyoto, you’ll find a lot of places that are awesome to stay! personally, i recommend to book a hotel not far from Kiyomizu-dera. in 9th grade we stayed at a hotel (ryokan) around that place and it was super convenient! you can easily go to Kiyomizudera which is a popular touring spot, plus, it’s not that far from Kyoto station!
i think that if you stay near Kyoto station, transportation would be a lot more easy!
also, because fall is the time when many high school students visit Kyoto as a school trip, so you do have to remember that busses would often be packed with people.

i’ve only been to Kyoto four times, but hope i was able to help you a bit.

We stayed at the Westin Hotel. When we were there, I think 10 years ago, most people didn’t speak English. It was even a challenge at the hotel - part of the reason we decided to stay at a major hotel chain. The hotel was centrally located. We were able to walk to temples and shopping. I think we were there 3 days. It was also the highlight of our Japan trip.
