My question is a little bit crazy, but I thought I’d ask it anyway.

If you have a legal name change, is it ok (i.e., legal) to continue using your old name until a time when it becomes “convenient” to start going by your new name?
For example, if you moved to a certain city for a master’s degree program, and in the midst of it you had your name changed, how acceptable is it to just go by your old name until you’re done with your degree and move to different city?

I don’t know how much this would affect things, but what if you have a green card and have been a U.S. permanent resident since childhood (planning on applying for naturalization eventually). Let’s say you already turned the green card with your old name in, and now just have a green card in your new name, but you still have a notarized copy of your old green card (which hasn’t expired, but how valid is a notarized copy?).

What are your limitations, if any? Could you still get jobs in your old name?
