I’m not sure how to answer this particular question. I’m into some HEAVY stuff but I don’t drink alcohol, never got drunk in my life and never smoked either. So my question is, would listing metal bands like Slayer or Lamb of God give them the wrong impression? Metalheads are stereotyped to be drinkers/smokers and kind of dirty people… and sure, lots of us are.

Should I just list the “nice” bands like Black Sabbath or Iron Maiden, and not get into deeper into metal??

Answer honestly. Your application should reflect on you as an individual, and give the reader a decent idea of who you are.

There is an absolute hoard of questions, so, if you don’t wish to be seen as a drinker/smoker (and who says this lowers your admissions chance?), I’m sure there will be a reflection of that in your other writing samples.

I’m not trying to impress them, I’d write Mozart or something otherwise This is more like not making them think who I’m not. I like heavy music but I don’t like this and that etc, they might look at it one-sided and get the wrong impression of me.

I kinda fixed it anyway, I wrote like 5 bands and said “in no particular order”, so yeah.

No, not at all. Part of our reading for Stanford '16 matriculants is “Fargo Rock City” which covers metal bands throughout the 80s. I wouldn’t worry about it. If i recall, I probably put Led Zeppelin, Vampire Weekend, Childish Gambino, etc. Just what I like to listen to.

This question is more of a “who are you” type of question so you should really answer honestly.
