I’m going to Cape Town then Namibia for 2 weeks in July. Any comments or advice, particularly about Etosha National Park? Will not be camping, but don’t want super-luxury, just comfortable places to stay. Have rented a 4WD.

In Capetown…check out Black Heath Inn. It’s a B and B…in Green Point that is really nice.

Interesting - we’ll be in Capetown in early July, then to Zambia and Tanzania

You’ll have a great time. Just don’t carry a lot of cash with you and keep your valuables to a minimum.

My daughter just returned from a semester in Capetown and I was able to visit and we also went to Victoria Falls – incredible places to visit! I stayed at a hotel close to her campus so not particularly helpful for you.

Going up Table Mountain was a true highlight. You’ll be there in winter and the clouds tend to hover…if you see it’s clear at any time, try to change your plans and go. I was there 6 days and it only cleared up on my last day. Amazing! Perhaps my favorite thing we did was go to Boulder Beach and watch the penguins. Be sure to walk slowly between the two viewing areas as we were able to see recently hatched eggs, babies, etc. which was in addition to the penguins on the beach from the viewing areas. My daughter and her friends really enjoyed Old Biscuit Mill–there’s a $5 chocolate tour there that you can take and, at the end, they hand you a small cup of the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had.

In terms of safety, we found we just needed to be mindful like we would be in any large city. There is quite a bit of poverty. When we couldn’t finish a meal in a restaurant, we’d ask for our leftovers to go and give them to people on the street. My daughter tried to always have granola bars with her and, when asked for money or food, would hand them out.

I’m getting wistful just thinking of Capetown! Enjoy your trip!

I just remembered we had a wonderful tour guide who took us to District 6 museum, a township and Mzolis (bbq place). I’d have to search for his card but PM me if you’d like his contact info.
