National College Match - 2009-2010

@Julia: If it does, then so am I. Craaaaaapppp

There was an extension given last year too.

But CSS automatically can waiver the fee if they view the family income through collegeboard, so that’s good.

Do we have to fax the Match Agreement at our high school?
I was wondering if I could use the fax in my home.

@sunflower: ZOMG let me know if you find out ok? That would seriously be the dumbest reason ever to not go through the round >.<

Okay, I just saw that my Counselor’s letter and my transcript have been received, but now I’m freaking out!

My SAT Subject tests aren’t on the test score report on my transcript! Will I be able to fax a printout from collegeboard from my school’s office without requesting an extension?!

Also, my school profile is attached at the end of my transcript for some reason… will this be a problem?!

I e-mailed questbridge and I’m awaiting a reply!

I can’ believe QuestBridge is still using faxes. Seriously, faxing died with the 90s. Can we move on? IT’S BEEN TEN YEARS.

Also, I recently received a Stanford guidebook AND a Yale guidebook on the same day. I hope that’s a good sign.

julia and sunflower: you didn’t have to. you just have to send it if you make finalist status. its under the school-specific requirements.

Pheww! I was so worried. Thanks, natim1!

i say we should start a countdown.

22 Days Until Notification :)

who’s nervous?!?!! im gonna have to try to keep calm these next 3 weeks. i can’t imagine what i would do if I was chosen as a finalist and had to wait another 5 weeks haha

lol yeah i know what u mean (@sinceredesirechick)

hey is anyone applying to the questbridge awards due oct.12? If so which one?

Faxes are still used in many ways. Yale had my D faxing things 2 years ago, not 10.

Yes, sites crash, you might have to fax…sometimes again if it didn’t go through. You might have to redo some short answers if they didn’t go through, ask your GC to fax a document, if they did indeed send your rec, etc.

I am not pointing fingers at any one person here, just a general note that I would like to make

QB is an organization that does wonderful things for so many students, whether you are a match or not. If you have looked on the QB website, you would know the numbers of finalists that receive acceptances with very generous money.

I know you are all very stressed, but I find it disturbing the comments that some of you have made. It is NOT QB’s fault that you were waiting to submit 15 minutes beforehand. You should have known there would be server overload. And then to say negative things about them because you procrastinated…not a mature attitude to take towards an organization that does nothing but help kids like all of yoiu get into great schools. Now that they are being so generous to extend their deadline, some of you are thinking you should tweak your essays. NO…those should have been done. The only reason you should need an extension is if a rec or GC has failed you. Deadlines are deadlines. Adhere to them and you will get farther in life. Procrastination is NEVER your friend.

All of you should assume that the staff at QB has read your comments, and you should edit your comments towards the mouth that feeds you. (also assume adcoms may be reading this.)

Sorry to be so harsh, but I have found some of your comments towards QB very disturbing. Take it upon yourself to create your positive outcome, not bash those who are trying to lead you there.

Peace
GA2012MOM

Sorry, I just read through this post, very disjointed, but I"m sure you get the jest of what I am trying to convey.

I can’t believe that I spent hours on my computer trying to submit my application yesterday! --;; I DID get to submit it, but I got an email today saying that my request for extension has been granted…soo…the deadline is Oct. 8th.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Oh well, at least I don’t have to worry anymore? But…my essays could have been 12093819487 times better if I had known about the extension a bit earlier TT Oh well…now I can focus on my extracurricular activities! Yay!

GA2012MOM: Yup, I agree. QB even sent out email letting students know in advance that the web slowdown was likely to happen and that students should try not to wait for the last minute. I am surprised with the number of students suggesting that the QB organization should spend money on servers, etc. Money spent on website infrastructure isn’t as helpful as money spent more directly to help students apply for and succeed at college.

WRT to “My essays would have been better if I had known I would have more time”, I have to ask – given that the deadline has been clear for months, I don’t understand why an extension on a deadline makes a difference. Why couldn’t you write good essays due yesterday? When did you start working on them? I mean, I have a little sympathy for my daughter, who didn’t find out that there was an art school participating in QB until mid-September, but not enough to cut her any slack about essays.

I’m not trying to be mean, I’m just really puzzled. I mean, life is about deadlines, in a sense. We don’t get to say, in college, or as adults, “Well, if you give me another week, I will make it better. And if you give me TWO weeks, it will be even better.”

^^^^^

Case in point, right above you trinsf. Not meaning to throw you in particular under the bus vesperx, but the VERY nice extension by QB was not meant for you to work on your essays. They should have been done. Yes, you could have edited it till the last moment, but to insinuate that your essays could have been better had you known of the extension…well, maybe you should have started earlier.

Again, I know I am coming across as harsh, but really…you have all known the deadlines and the requirements. To come across as if you were unaware or somewhat entitled to more time is bad taste.

Come back a year from now and let me know how it went when you tell your XXXXX teacher that you need another week to edit your paper.

Two words that will take you far…TIME MANAGEMENT

guys, i forgot to but NHS on my QB honor/award section…should i email them for an extension so i can add it?

CodeH, no, NHS is basically meaningless as just about every QB applicant is a member of it. It is the equivalent of saying you were on the A honor roll. JMO

Yeah, I think it’s profoundly tacky to ask for an extension that was meant to compensate for server slowdowns just to submit extra materials, or to work on essays. Next year, they should require folks to email the essays in final form before midnight, if they can’t enter them, to discourage that. Your application materials should have been in final form by midnight last night Pacific time. It’s one thing not to be able to update the web site with the finished materials. It’s quite another to treat an extension as an opportunity to spend more time on essays.

But that said, I’m pretty sure that every access and update is time stamped, and they’ll be able to tell if modification of the essays happed after last night. I would not be surprised if information about the kind of modifications an applicant made during an extension is part of their file and in some small way factors into finalist decisions. For that reason alone, I wouldn’t risk it.

You’re right GA2012MOM. QB does have an amazing staff, and they have been very kind with the extension time. I know a lot of people were getting stressed–I was too. But it was my fault and when I think about it, they were up at the same time last night as we were–I’m sure just as stressed, if not, more. I understood that the sever problem was not their fault, but it was still unfair of me to be frustrated in the first place  And they really do do so much considering how few of them there are. Thank you for posting this.

Thanks, GAmom, for writing what I was thinking last night.
