@NJEngineerDad I have not seen the major map. D20 researchs the academics and I look around for any financial info.
We indeed got a great deal when we purchased the Florida prepaid plan when she was a newborn. We bought the 4-year university plan and paid if off in 4 years. We were confident with the plan because it was guarantee by the Florida legislature and we researched the options offered if we ever needed to move out of Fla or request a refund. Not many prepaid plans work like that.
The dormitory option it’s something that we added later on, I think maybe at the end of middle school and that along was almost $7K.
The earlier you buy the prepaid plans the better. They offer options to pay it in full, pay monthly for 5 years or monthly from when it is purchased until the August before the kids graduate.
We did ended up moving out to Texas, with UT-Austin just 30 minutes away and a very good engineering school that does offer Arch E so fingers crossed that things would work out at the end.
@ildro OK. Well it looks like she will have options then. There is no question that Austin is a top school for civil engineering. Still if I were her, I would apply to ASU on top of Austin and Florida, as well as their respective Honors colleges and the supplemental competitive scholarships, to maximize the number of good offers to pick from. At the undergrad level ASU’s civil engineering program compares favorably to Florida (US News ranking #19 vs #30).
@ildro Daughter really liked UT Austin, but even with NHRP and a 33 on ACT thought it was a long shot for her to get into school as a business major and being OOS.
@SaguaroMom Yeah, I have heard that it’s very competitive and few spots for OOS kids., specially for the McCombs School of Business.
For the upcoming class this will be the first year after their new financial aid changes maybe your daughter can still give it a shot.

Hi does anyone know of any schools in California that offer benefits for being a National Hispanic Scholar? I tried looking for some but I noticed that most (if not all) of the schools that recognize this recognition are out of state (It isn’t really an option to go out of state)
Hi All. Congrats to you (or your child) for becoming an NHRP scholar! I have been in higher ed for 30 years, and last year my daughter was an NHRP scholar. I have several lists compiled from 2017 and 2018 that list the schools across the country that give money for NHRP. Please contact me through my e-mail if you’d like me to send you those lists (amy.marin@phoenixcollege.edu). Also, I want to put in a plug for University of Kentucky. My daughter was not expecting to love the visit, but I made her go and she fell in love. It’s beautiful, the dorms are brand new, the honors program is good, and they pay full tuition AND the first 2 years of housing. She is pre-med and they have several hospitals on campus. She’s only been there 3 months and she’s already doing service-learning in one of the hospitals and loving it. We live 10 minutes from ASU so she was NOT interested in staying in state, but I have an NHRP son at ASU, and I’ve taught at ASU, so if anyone wants to ask questions about ASU, I’m happy to provide info. on that school as well. Happy hunting!
HighLady8 – There are not a lot of automatic NHRP scholarships for California schools. I know that Cal State Long Beach used to office full tuition for NHRP scholars, but that was 2017, so you would need to verify if they are still offering that scholarship.
For anyone considering University of Kentucky - my daughter would fair better under the Singletary scholarship where she would get full tuition and the 2 years of housing.
Otis A. Singletary Competitive 3.80 33 ACT or 1450 SAT Full out-of-state tuition + housing stipend* 2 years
Patterson Selective National Merit Finalist or National Hispanic Recognition Scholar; National Merit Finalists must list UK as college choice with National Merit Scholarship Corporation. National Hispanic Scholars contact the Academic Scholarship office for required documentation. Full out-of-state tuition + housing stipend** 1 year
I am assuming many of the NHRP students would also qualify with their ACT or SAT scores.
@SaguaroMom University of Kentucky used to give two years of housing to NHRPs and that is why @ArizonaParent 's daugther got two years of housing last year as a NHRP. You are right that NHRPs only get one year of housing as of this year and that, if you qualify, Singletary is now a better deal. However, Singletary is a competitive scholarship. Patterson is not.
Is admittance to University of Arizona automatic for NHRP recipients? My son applied, hasn’t received an acceptance letter but got an email stating, “In recognition of your National Hispanic Scholar status, we’re pleased to offer you automatic admission into the Honors College and consider you for the Arizona Tuition Award.”
My daughter received her NHRP letter and certificate in September, but has not received a single e-mail or snail mail targeting her as a NHRP recipient. Then she got this response from ASU : “You indicated on your Barrett, the Honors College application that you are a National Hispanic Scholar awardee. We did not receive your name on the list of awardees. Can you please send me verification of your award? You can send an image of your certificate, award letter, or both.”
So apparently there is a “list of awardees” sent out to schools, and apparently it is not accurate? That’s very concerning!
As a useful tidbit of information for everyone - something that I was unaware of - here’s the very quick response I received from NHRP :
We are a third-party organization that handles the application process only. If you have issues, you can contact College Board PSAT representatives at 866-433-7728 or email psathelp@info.collegeboard.org for assistance.
The list to the colleges comes from College Board directly.
@KevinfromOC my daughter has not received one email or snail mail targeting her either. She did send her NHRP certificate and award letter to ASU so they have her for the National Scholar scholarship instead of just the Presidential.
Additionally, I called the PSAT number that you provided and they inturn told me that I have to call NHRP-really not much help at all. If you get any solid information, can you post who you talked to- I am also sending a message to her high school to find out if they were even notified.
It’s been rather quiet here lately. Would love to hear how applications are going? Any admits, yet? Good merit offers? Please share your student’s successes.
Cal Poly SLO offered me last year 1/3 off the tuition. I had to send my NHRP certificate for verification. The scholarship was awarded but I didn’t use it because I ended up not going there.
My son applied and was accepted to Fordham but didn’t get offered anything. and he is a NHRP.
@marivelvmiller@yahoo.com - so sorry to hear your son wasn’t offered any merit for his accomplishment. Some schools, like Fordham, have put additional requirements on NHRP scholarships. For example, Fordham now requires a solid A average, and the applicant must be in the top 2–3% of all admitted students. If you believe your son meets this I would contact the admissions office. There are lots of great schools that will give close to full tuition and auto admit into their honors college.
what were your sons gpa/test scores? Was that his top pick?
@marivelvmiller@yahoo.com So sorry to hear that. Are you aware they received your son’s NHRP information?
Back in October my daughter received an email from Fordham inviting her to apply and it also included a few waiver.
The email specified NHRP and read “because it allows you to be considered for a four-year, full-tuition scholarship from Fordham. Our Committee on Scholarship will automatically review all admissible applications for this award.”
Hope you get answers from the financial aid office if that is where your son wants to be.
