National History Day

Hello, I am a father of two sons currently living in Washington. My eldest son is currently in eleventh grade and is attending one of the most rigorous public schools in the country, the Bellevue International Community School. He has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and has recently received a 2340 on the SAT. For an academic competition, my son engaged in the National History Day competition and managed to place 3rd in nationals in the group website category. I would like to know how good this competition is considered. For example, I know that placing in the top 40 in something like the famous Intel Science Competition is literally gold for the admissions process into a highly-selective college such as Columbia. But is NHD also on your list? What respect would you give to this history competition?
