National Merit Cutoff Predictions Class of 2017

anyone in CA getting anything from colleges stating PSAT performance, my S has 226 but we have received nothing that mentions PSAT performance.

@StressedinCA We are in CA (Central Coast) with a 224. We have gotten mailings from OU and USC that mention PSAT or “College Board scores.” We tend to get them several days after people on here mention them. A lot of mailers go straight to recycling, so we may miss some. Your S may have checked the box to not receive mailings on the PSAT or may have bubbled the address slightly wrong.

@StressedinCA we have gotten a few very recently (like the USC one) that have vague statements (about “according to recent info we got from College Board”) about test performance. None of them specifically mention what test is involved, but it cant be a coincidence that this cluster of mailings goes out right around when College Board decided the Commended cut-off.

Same here. The unsolicited mail and email S has received has basically said based on information received from the College Board
S checked the box that said it is OK to send him info,

got it, thx

Just a reminder that if your kid is in range for NM and is taking any more tests this Saturday or on the June date, it’s not too early to send a free score report to NMS. If your child already has a good SAT score and is taking subject tests, for example, you can go ahead and send those past SAT scores for free.

NMS doesn’t care about the subject test scores but you get to send any or all past SAT scores for free. Last year, the qualifying SAT score was 1960 and there is some “talk” that it might change this year. No one yet knows what that will be but it doesn’t hurt to send the best score while it’s free. From what I’ve read here, NMS doesn’t super score, just one SAT sitting is required to reach the qualifying score.

When you log onto your account and click send free score reports next to the current test date, it takes you to a window to search and simply typing National Merit pulls up the right account. You can uncheck and check any previous tests but the current test must be sent in order for the sending to be free.

Crossing fingers for everyone who is hoping to qualify for NMSF!

Just curious, were any of your kids were told by their schools that they made commended? I know the school gets the letter and they are supposed to check it for spelling errors, etc. but dd’s school never said a word to her or any other kids. If not for CC, we wouldn’t even know she qualified for commended.

@fidoprincess our school hasn’t said anything about commended

@fidoprincess “If your child already has a good SAT score and is taking subject tests, for example, you can go ahead and send those past SAT scores for free.”

Our son took the March SAT and we didn’t know that scores had to be sent to NMCorp. Would it still be free to send that score even though it’s past their normal deadline for sending free scores?

that is offensive that they dont make a bigger deal out of it. Hopefully it isn’t some politically correct thing.

@youcee, no, it’s too late to send free scores from March. Often people don’t send the qualifying score to NMS until Sept when the cutoff scores for NMSF are announced and they know for a fact that it’s necessary. I was just reminding people that it’s not too early to send them now and take advantage of the free score reports for the upcoming tests this Saturday and in early June if it’s likely that student will make the “guestimated” cutoff scores for their states.

@flatKansas, kind of sad, isn’t it? I would think schools would want to tell the kids especially right before the dreaded finals and ap tests to cheer them on. Plus, I think it would be wise to let the kids know now especially if they haven’t taken the SAT at all and they are within range of possibly making NMSF so they could take the SAT now or in June. So many kids just switched to the ACT and didn’t bother with the SAT this year because of all the changes.

I know I will be following this thread to make sure I get all the correct information on dates and scores. DD’s school announces commended students at their fall awards ceremony in late November but I thought that they told the kids earlier than that in the spring when the letter comes to the school. Now I know we have to watch the for deadlines on CC because her school is not reliable and I can’t remember them ever having a semi-finalist before. As far back as 2009, only a handful of kids have been commended, certainly no more than 3 per year and most years only one or none. I am crossing fingers for DD.

Thank you @fidoprincess . I had never read the SAT scores needed to be sent to NMCorp until about a week ago. A ticky tack charge if you ask me considering they gave the original PSAT scores to NMCorp.

@fidoprincess Thanks!! DD took SAT back in October, but I didn’t think to send her scores to NMSC until it was too late, and her free reports went to waste. She is in fact taking the SAT subject tests this Saturday, so after I read your post, I logged on and used one of her free reports to send all of the scores to NMSC this time around. Saved about $12, and more importantly, I got it taken care of! One less thing to worry about in September.

@Lea111 Thank you! I did not realize the SAT score could get sent to NMCorp via the subject tests. We’ll do that for the June tests.

@fidoprincess our school also hasn’t said anything about commended. our GC couldn’t even tell me how many kids got over 220. I was trying to figure out CA cutoff based on our school history

@fidoprincess Thanks for this tip about getting to send free scores for kids taking subject matter tests on Saturday. That is good information!

My son has not been told by his school that he qualified for commended. I didn’t expect they would as they have been playing it very conservative. When my son met with his college counselor a couple of weeks after the PSAT results were released, she discussed with him his testing schedule (AP exams, SAT subject tests and mentioned that he “may” have to take the new SAT in September if he were a NMSF". She’s reiterated this in a couple of meetings with him. She called me to let me know she was going to make some recommendations to my son but wanted to make sure I was comfortable with her recommendations before she discussed them with him and I couldn’t resist asking her about NMSF. She played it conservative and said “if he does he may have to take the new SAT but we don’t need to cross that bridge until September.”

@paveyourpath - Wow! I am amazed at how proactive your college counselor is. My DDs counselor has less than 40 students and has only had one meeting with my DD that lasted more than 2 minutes. The two times I called her with questions she emailed me back. It sounds like you have a great college counselor!

@fidoprincess

My D was informed of being commended at her junior conference, this is the one time during junior year when our counselors talk to juniors about graduation, college, career, etc.

D21 goes to an all girls school for grades 6-12th. They have the name of the 11th grader flashing on the digital sign in front of school, congratulating the girl as " Nation Merit Scholar".

Oops. Hopefully she will be! Otherwise it is a little embarrassing for the school. Our counselor is clueless. I had to explain the process to him. I hope they follow through with our end in the fall. D is a 220 in Utah.

@fidoprincess Exactly. I feel like I’m jumping the gun a bit making DS take the SAT in June (and he’s super crabby about it) since the NM thing isn’t even on his radar because nobody talks about it. I pitched it to him to do it now on the heels of all his test prep and hopefully he does well enough to never do it again! He is busy with marching band through October, so if we can avoid a fall SAT I’d sure like to.

Our school is crazy gung ho about NM, so I’m baffled why they are dragging their feet about any information. I assume its just because of all the uncertainty with the new test numbers.
