Things might work out for us financially in that D3 doesn’t get into any of her reaches! LOL.
UMN would be in-state tuition less the $10,000 Gold plus I think an automatic $2,000 NMF? Not sure. Anyway that’s practically full tuition paid for. And D3’s a shoe-in for Honors. Unfortunately she wants to go out-of-state and her #1 choice isn’t exactly generous with FA or merit aid (and forget about NMF). I asked my husband what his response would be if all her other choices were $50,000+ / yr. more than UMN. His response: “Ski-U-Mah!”. I think that’s Norwegian for “she’s staying in-state”.
@Tgirlfriend, S is looking mainly at OU and ASU, honors college at both. Also Cal Poly and UofAz honors (maybe). Cal Poly give $0 for NMF, but we can afford and he is likely to graduate in 4 years because of the way they are set up. He actually isn’t applying to any reaches because he wants to stay in the western US, we can’t (won’t) afford CA public schools (not CA residents) or Univ. of WA, and although he really liked Stanford, he has no hook and really doesn’t want to write the required essays to throw his name into the hat. He has toured all of those schools plus others and is happy with those choices. I am happy that three of them will offer a substantial amount for NMF.
Anyone else think the discussion should be moved over to the National Merit subforum under Finaid and Scholarships? That’s where the annual discussion of cutoffs has taken place for as long as I can remember (oldest is class of 2012).
I think letters go out to home-schoolers tomorrow – so by Friday we hopefully will get info from some and more next week. I am not sure when high schools will get their lists - early or mid-Sept. I think. Good luck to all of our hopefuls!!
The high schools will receive their lists the same time homeschoolers do. It just depends on when the high schools share that info with their students.
I can’t remember the national “release” day for this year–Sept 9? 13? (too many deadlines floating through my head)–but it’s here on this long thread if one wishes to go searching.
Same here as many of you, the schools my son is applying to won’t give any money, with the exception of one school on the list (BU), but maybe the designation will help. Tomorrow is supposed to be the day letters are mailed out.
@flatKansas That is exactly my hope also. My son isn’t fired up about college, doesnt talk about it unless I press. Guess once he starts getting letters back it will fire him up. He just stays focused on whats before him presently.
This thread has been so interesting and we have more to learn and share – it is the journey and the ins and outs of the PSAT changes, concordance tables, cutoffs (and the compression and other nuances) that make it so relevant and next year’s students and parents hopefully will learn something too. BTW - what about those state summary reports??? Huge thanks to you all for keeping this going — sharing news, guesses, concerns and for the AMAZING sleuthing done many pages back!! Can’t believe the “Big Reveal” is almost here – are Testmasters, Compass and other groups following us too? I so hope the compressed high cutoffs are not as bad as we predicted!!
S’s public school is pretty good about notifying the kids, so as soon as I hear he made it I will post. Note though that his school doesn’t start until next Monday.
Just out of curiosity, how difficult is getting NMS? I think my PSAT score(224 in WA) should be high enough for NMSF and I think my grades, essay, xcs, and test scores should be enough to get NMF but I’m not sure what my chances are for NMS.
