<p>Okay, here’s my story. A decade ago I flunked out of a fairly nice (not Ivy or anything) college due to immaturity, gnawing insecurity due to having no clue what to do with my life, and so forth. The old, old story.</p>
<p>Fast forward to now. I’m wrapping up an A.A. transfer degree and A.A.S. at a community college, where I’ve been for three years. (Could have made it out in two if I’d planned better, but ah well.) I’m loving school this time around and have a decent GPA (3.6).</p>
<p>I’m working my way through the applications for four-year colleges and they all have the community service/awards/extracurricular section. I’m wondering if I should mention that I was a National Merit Scholar back in the day. On the one hand, hey, National Merit Scholar! On the other hand, do I really want to be emphasizing anything from that miserable period in my past*? Would listing it send the wrong message? They probably symbolically ripped up my award when I flunked out of college anyway and, of course, there’s no money in it for whatever school I attend.</p>
<p>I’d really appreciate some opinions on this, as I keep going back and forth about whether to list it or not. </p>
