National Society of Collegiate Scholars

I have been reading some past discussions about the $ 75.00 fee for membership about it being a scam I received a nomination and I asked my school about it and was told that it was not a scam just some info for those that think it is. I would still check with your school and find out if the nomination you received was legit.

waste of money. Read the other threads on this topic

My 2 cents is – if you have access to an active chapter of this group, then it is as good as any other similar club. If you don’t, then spending $75 on it wouldn’t be a good use of your money. Groups like this are not prestigious at all; some of them invite anyone with a pulse, basically, and none of them look particularly good on your resume in and of themselves.

Before spending the money, I would definitely check out two things: (1) is your local chapter of the Society actually active in service and leadership, or is it just a bunch of people who had $75 to burn? (2) are there no free alternatives that are just as good (or better) on your college campus? Most colleges to my knowledge do have service organizations, fraternities, groups like Habitat for Humanity, etc. on campus so I’d be surprised if the Society was actually a great option for most students.

If the answer to both of those questions is ‘no’, however, then joining the NSCS might be worthwhile. If not, then I can think of a lot of other things that I could do with $75.

OP is, surprise, surprise, a first time poster, likely yet another NSCS shill trying to drum up interest. Best way to respond to these is just to link to the prior threads as @jym626 did and then letting the thread die a natural death rather than giving the organization free publicity by posting responses.

I am looking at it this way that while being nominated and becoming a member then I can use that when I graduate and have it on my resume others may look at it in a different light as it is a waste of 95 dollars at least i’m looking at things in a positive way. Good luck to all that have become members.

I value the scholarships that I will have and will receive from them

And as with all previous iterations of this thread, when the organization is painted as a waste of money, posters with little or no postcount come out of the woodworks to defend it. There is something to be said for predictability and consistency. MommaJ called it and she is correct.

The post that I started is something I believe in that will help me as well as others now and in the future. It is the ones that put down NSCS either cant afford, or have a GPA that is high enough to get in or they think it is a waste of time or lame those are the people that have to put things, and people down by saying stuff that gives NSCS a bad name.

hahahaha. We are parents, who know better. You are barking up the wrong tree. Save your money and apply to legit organizations who truly put most of their money to scholarships- not to fund their coffers.http://www.dailyillini.com/opinion/columns/article_adb255f6-7653-11e2-99b5-001a4bcf6878.html?mode=jqm

I understand your concerns but I have already received a scholarship from them

http://cageyconsumer.com/students/scholars.html

So between 9:25 when you looked forward to scholarships you will have and 9:42 you got a scholarship?? Too funny.

In my earlier post I was talking about the scholarship I have received and the ones that I will receive. But enough of this waste of my time with someone so negative I’m done. Whoever wants to talk about the benefits of being a member at NSCS send me a post.

Goodbye. Til the next “new poster” comes on to tout this thing. Sigh…

you keep sending me stuff about high school honors being a scam

No one is sending “you” anything. This is an open forum. This organization makes millions from membership fees and gives a comparatively small portion back in scholarship money. If you got some of it, count your blessings. Its interesting to say the least that they will no longer disclose their financials.

Just curious…how much is your scholarship?

As noted, this organization invites practically every HS student to join. It is not an honor in any way, shape or form. As noted above, if there is an active chapter near you, and you wish to become involved. Fine. But really…they are hoping that folks will simply send them $75 and be thrilled to join.

My suggestion is…frame the letter. Use the $75 to buy some school supplies.
